Ron Beron Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I stumbled upon the upcoming fall lineup for NBC and was disappointed, but not surprised, to find a complete lack of African Americans, Hispanics, Chinese or Middle Eastern nationalities. Virtually every program has a white male in the leading role with a token African American. I could not spot any Hispanics other then young women in a sexual pose. It seems to me that there were more non-whites on tv in the 70s and 80's than there is today. And these are the same people who attach the church for racism and bigotry. Yet nobody seems to care.I would love to see a show about a Cuban or Mexican American family.I was interested in other perspectives of patent hypocracy concerning bigotry. We seem to be accused of it by the very people who benefit from it.It could be that we have reached a point where most minorities are cast as part of the regular cast regardless of their background. I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do I see a fairly good representation of all races on the shows. The only exception I have noticed is a lack of Asians and Pacific Islanders.
DH Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 They are not being overtly racist, but more concerned about money than reality and inclusion. I doubt the viewers of the 1960's viewed the depiction of African Americans and Chinese in their programming as racist but we do today. Hopefully, as a society, we will look back at tv today and be somewhat ashamed. Yes. Our ideas about what race and racism mean change over time. What people shrugged off or didn't notice at all 50 years ago might raise eyebrows today, and likewise, as you said, people of the future may chuckle about how unenlightened (in their perception) we are today.Of course, the programming of the future will have a lot more shameful content.Why do you say that? Who's to say it won't get better?
