Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 The Priesthood Session is available now located here
Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Wow, I just finished listening to Elder Bednar in the Priesthood Session. He, as usual, was amazing. An excellent talk on the POWER of the priesthood.
mercyngrace Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Does anyone know why they don't stream the session or show it on T.V. like they do the General Relief Society Meeting?I think modern church leaders have learned a lesson from Jacob. They don't want to yell at men in front of their wives and children.... 2
Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 (edited) I think modern church leaders have learned a lesson from Jacob. They don't want to yell at men in front of their wives and children....Yell? Hahaha, that's pretty funny. In all the years I've been listening and attending priesthood session, I've never felt like I've been yelled at. Never in Priesthood session. But I do hear a lot of talks about being patient with wives and children. Edited April 1, 2012 by Messenger

cdowis Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Because it's only for priesthood holders.Edit: Actually, no, that's not true... all males older than 12 are invited. One doesn't have to hold the priesthood to attend.I understand the sister missionaries are also allowed to attend, both in GC and stake conference. They were in our session, sitting inconspiciously in the back.
cdowis Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 (edited) My experience - I've seen two stake presidents ask sisters to leave priesthood meetings. I've also seen letters that were issued to the stake presidency in the past 8 years that said sisters were not to attend priesthood meetings, including opening exercises. I can not produce this letter because I don't have a copy.Years ago there were a group of reporters who had been invited to attend General Conference. But it went badly when the female reporters were not allowed to attend the priesthood session -- only the male reporters (even though they did not hold the priesthood).Ouch! Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 He-Man Woman Haters ClubMembers of the same sex only! Actually if you think about it, it is kind of weird having separate meetings, one for women and one for men. But, I suppose there are issues that are unique to our roles as men, and likewise for women. I've never had a desire to peek into the women's conference! But, there may be some men that do. I have a very good stake president that says the manuals written for the ladies are also very good and he says he reads it with his wife everyday. Ok. Someday maybe we will understand the sexes enough to feel comfortable with the differences in men and women, and be able to handle the advice given to each. I had a bishop once that said his wife kept him on track all the time. Ok. (of course he said that right in front of her!). It is a strange mixed road of tradition we sometimes travel. But I will say this.... I really did enjoy the Priesthood session. And its nice to know that we men can teach each other, and not only be taught by the good women in our lives.
cinepro Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 I suspect the Priesthood Session is not available online or over cable because it is supposed to be a "meeting". The brethren want the "Priesthood" to gather together to listen to it. I'm sure if you asked you'd get an answer that references heavenly councils and early Church gatherings of priesthood holders. They like the idea of chapels all over the world filled with white-shirted men and their sons. The idea of having a "Priesthood Meeting" where the majority of attendees are wearing jeans or pajamas, slouched on their sofas with the women folk walking in and out of the room just isn't kosher. 1
mfbukowski Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Better yet, we can do sacrament meeting over a video-conferencing system and we can just stay in bed. Go into the kitchen, get a hunk of bread and there you go.
Kenngo1969 Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 The Priesthood Session is available now located hereAnd one doesn't even need the CX-7000-B decoder ring to access it! Bummer! I'm writing the Brethren! 2
Scott Lloyd Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Years ago there were a group of reporters who had been invited to attend General Conference. But it went badly when the female reporters were not allowed to attend the priesthood session -- only the male reporters (even though they did not hold the priesthood).Ouch!Well, I'm acquainted with what you're talking about, and that's not quite how it happened. But then, rumors quite often are not altogether accurate.
Scott Lloyd Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 I understand the sister missionaries are also allowed to attend, both in GC and stake conference. They were in our session, sitting inconspiciously in the back. This strikes me as odd. I'm afraid I would need to see some documentation to believe it. (That it's approved, that is. You may have witnessed something that does not have official sanction.)
bluebell Posted April 1, 2012 Author Posted April 1, 2012 I have a very good stake president that says the manuals written for the ladies are also very good and he says he reads it with his wife everyday. That's kind of an odd statement, since both the men and the women use the same manual. I wonder what he meant? As for the OP, thanks everyone who chimed in. What i'm gathering is that no one really knows why it's not available. That's pretty much what i thought the answer would be.

Just looked it up online now... perhaps that's what he meant.
Scott Lloyd Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 That's kind of an odd statement, since both the men and the women use the same manual. I wonder what he meant? There are manuals written for women that are not used regularly in Relief Society meetings, namely The Latter-day Saint Women, Parts A and B. Perhaps that is what Messenger's stake president was referring to.
Scott Lloyd Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Is that what your wife told you? ( ) Actually, some are the same, and some are different. Just looked it up online now... perhaps that's what he meant.Umm, Bluebell is female. 1
Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 (edited) Scott,NO! Really? Oh but its funnier if the spouse was female! Just flow with it .... come on, come on, you know you can. No? Oh, I am soo sorry.Bluebell,Seriously, I think its just nice to taught by a group of men too (not that there's anything wrong with being taught with women's lesson manuals). Lets face it, not every man is quiet and submissive when in the presence of the wife. And, not every man wants to be (although there aren't many on this thread!). Its takes all kinds of people to be in the church. You might as well be asking why the men have the priesthood and the women don't. Just think, for those men that are quiet and submissive in front of their wives, how many points they could score by being the OP on that! LOL . Some men are independent, and I'm sure there are some women that are attracted to that, as I am absolutely 100% sure that there are at least an equal amount (or greater) that are not attracted to that.Like I said earlier, I really enjoyed the priesthood session. And I certainly invite everyone, even those that don't like independent thinking men, as well as quite and submissive husband to try it (and of course, anybody else...) .The messages are still true, even if there are people that question why we deliver them the way we do. Perhaps its just to tick them off. Or not. Edited April 1, 2012 by Messenger

In all the years I've been listening and attending priesthood session, I've never felt like I've been yelled at. Never in Priesthood session. But I do hear a lot of talks about being patient with wives and children.I've never been yelled at but Elder Packer clearly preached repentance to a group of us priesthood holders at a BYU regional conference back in the 90s. I shared his counsel with my wife (a brave move) and she's held me to it ever since. There is some value to having a gathering with "just the guys" to be able to lean and speak frankly about guy issues. Before the million man march or oathkeepers- we have been doing this for decades. Some observations about the value in my life include:The opportunity for Scouts to bring up sensitive issues about dating and women during informal discussions at camp or during meetings. The opportunity for men and their sons to talk about the priesthood without worrying about who is listeningThe chance to learn how to be a manly man by respecting women and repenting of worldly lusts in intimate conversations with fathers and brothersThe same value applies to daughters with daddy daughter dates and other set aside opportunities to have private time without stinky boys listening in Edited April 1, 2012 by KevinG
KevinG Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 I teach HP quorum and discuss the lessons afterward with my wife. The sisters and brethren emphasize what is important to their roles and experience and they are often different in delivery while covering the same doctrines.Vive la difference!

blooit Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 I had a close friend baptized years ago. I took him to priesthood session only days afterward. He was visibly uncomfortable and finally asked, "where are all the women?"You can't imagine his relief when I explained that this was like when we split into priesthood and RS during church, and it was the only "male-only" meeting during conference.
Messenger Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Are those manuals used at all in any official capacity anymore?Nobody said they had to be "Official", just that he read them with his wife.
rongo Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Well, I'm acquainted with what you're talking about, and that's not quite how it happened. But then, rumors quite often are not altogether accurate. How did it happen, and how was it different from cdowis' representation?
