Duncan Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I buy stuff online on a fairly regular basis, mostly books, articles, nuts and beans for my parents and out of date legos for my 9yr son...anyways I buy them pretty much any day when I have a chance to do so but it occurred to me once am I breaking the sabbath by buying online on sunday? I am not causing anyone to work sunday,usually the ship out monday and if it's a home based business and they want to work and fill the order that day then that is their business not mine but if I hadn't ordered would they work anyways? So, pardon the run on sentence but what do you think?

Here are a few questions that need to be answered before you will arrive at your own conclusion. What is the purpose of the Sabbath? Based upon that, what kind of activities are in keeping with its purpose? How can you improve the spirit of the Sabbath in your home? Do those things that lead to fulfilling the purpose of the Sabbath as much as possible and try to avoid all else. Accept the fact that there will be some Sabbath days when it will be more difficult or impossible to keep it as you would like. In those situations, choose those things that will do the least disruption to the spirit of the Sabbath.

You choose what works. There will be times when it works for you and other times when it does not. You have to listen to the Spirit. Some will shun any sort of using money on the Sabbath while others will feel more comfortable with it. As a rule we would counsel members not to buy anything on the Sabbath; to plan ahead and take care of any of your needs before hand. The kind of preparation can assist in having an improved mindset for the Sabbath; you are prepared to devote yourself to the Sabbath day. You have to make decisions for yourself. You will fall short at times and repent and at other times you will do great. Welcome to beiing a child of God. The gospel of Christ is about teaching each of us to listen to the Spirit and following his guidance. It is not about relying on leaders to direct our every action; that is a path of weakness and is what the children of Israel demanded.
Calm Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 For me I avoid online shopping on Sunday or even 'looking at the windows' because it tends to shift me into a materialistic frame of mind, something that I see as getting in the way of listening to the Spirit and being with the Community of Saints in heart, mind and body.Not saying this is how everyone responds so they shouldn't do it. Just saying this is how it works for me andI would caution my family members to consider the choice for themselves. 1

I've considered the responses of the others so far (and I really like DH's!), and decided that there's nothing wrong with it. YMMV of course, and I would not advocate for one or the other for anyone else. 1

Questions of conscience should be decided by ones self or if you choose wrong are you going to try the "everybody said it was OK" defense?

My feeling is that if you are shopping - even on-line, your mind really isn't keep the Sabbath day holy. However, I suppose there could be times when the ox is in the myre, although I cant think of any right now! LOL

So, pardon the run on sentence but what do you think?When I think about what to do on the Sabbath, I consider D&C 59:9-19, and whether what I want to do falls under the principle, "And on this day thou shalt do none other thing."

Most sets double in price as soon as they stop making them from what I've seen. There are stores that sell pieces individually and probably make at least 10 times what the original buyer paid for them. BTW, the only place I have ever found cheaper legos (besides ones on sale) than at lego.com is Walmart and that is only for a few cents. While expensive, you can even design your own unique set and they will make it up for you. You can even get free shipping if you buy a couple of sets at least twice a year. Oh...and you can get replacement parts if something essential has gone missing as well as instructions even for old sets. Yes, I freely admit it, the only thing that comes close to my books and a few heirlooms in my life are my legos.
