Just watched Gladiator over the weekend.  An old favorite, perhaps because they used to say that I look like Russel Crow.

We had a free Showtime weekend and I watched "Dark Skies". Really creepy alien movie and I can't stop thinking about it.

Just got back from seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  In 3D.

It was quite good, better than CA1 in fact.  The 3D was OK, but not all that big a deal.  I just don't think 3D adds much to any movie.  Although it did add a lot to Avatar.

What do they say now?

It was about a family targeted for alien abduction and all the things happening to them. There were some really scary moments but it was creepy because it involved parents trying to protect their kids.

The first look at Ben Affleck as Batman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie has been revealed by the film's director on Twitter.

Why is batman fighting superman? Aren't they both on the same "team"?

Yeah... why?

I just watched the remake of "Captains Couragous" made in 1994 and starring Robt Ulrich... which was fine if you hadn't seen the original from the 1940's starring Spencer Tracy and Freddie Bartholomew...  For those not familiar with the story... the main story is about a very rich boy whose father is an industrialist... and the boy attends private schools, etc., and has an "attitude" of privilege... and getting his way however he can, even through intimidation of his classmates, etc.  While sailing on an oceanliner he falls overboard and a Portugese fisherman named Manuel picks him up in his dory, which is part of a fishing schooner out of Glouchester... the boy demands to be taken back to New York immediately, and the capt (played by Lionel Barrymore) just laughs and explains that the boy will just have to wait until their fishing season is over... that this is their livlihood for the rest of the year... and assigns the boy chores, who stamps his foot and refuses to do them.  The capt tells him if he doesn't work, he doesn't eat.  Reluctantly the boy complies... and what unfolds is the story of a bratty, spoiled boy growing up, who discovers a true friend and mentor in Manuel, and who learns responsibility, and loyalty, and really works for the first time in his life.

The contrast between the brattiness of Freddie B. and the '94 boy really adversely affects the newer version.  The same between Ulrich's captain and Barrymore's captain...    the richness of the story and characters is missing from the '94 movie, but is okay if you haven't seen the original...

Superman and Batman are on the same team eventually but they haven't always been friends.

You would have to read the read the graphic novel, "The Dark Knight" to know exactly why and to tell you why here would be a major spoiler alert.  Suffice it to say Batman was being put into place, but Superman takes a licking too.

I have to admit that i am getting really tired of all the super hero movies.  I've pretty much just stopped watching them altogether.  It's interesting that the authors of these things would make Batman and Superman enemies.

I agree Bluebell, give me movies like "Sleepless in Seattle", "You've Got Mail"....or any good love story. I haven't wanted to go to the movies for several weeks now. :(

My two favorite movies so far this year:  It's Complicated with Merle Streep... and, Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks.  Two very different stories, but both really good.

I loved "Captain Phillips", such a good movie, that was pretty close to how it happened, and Tom is one of my favorite actors.

I haven't seen "It's Complicated" yet, but checked out the trailer, it looks good.

I like the super hero genre, but it is really predictable.  I personally loved traditional animation, such as Bambi, etc.  Today I watched ParaNorman.  Cute film.  I finally watched "Saints and Soldiers"  What a great film.

They're not enemies, just not friends. They don't trust each other to start out with. They're very different characters. The Dark Knight Returns is considered a classic in graphic novels and comic books, and shows a conflict between Superman and Batman; it's a very entertaining story, and it's much more complex than just "Superman and Batman are fighting each other." It doesn't share continuity with the main comics, but I think it's worth reading simply as a good story, and the Batman vs. Superman film takes some inspiration from it.

Anyway, just got back from watching Godzilla. I'm a huge Godzilla fan, and I'll admit I cheered with glee on several occasions while watching it. This movie is terrific.

I'm surprised that Godzilla looks as good as it does in the trailers.  The last remake was so horrible that when i heard they were doing it again, i had no hope for it.

Godzilla: In terms of dramatic action spectacle, it's great. But there's almost no real character or personality or levity, and that hurts it overall for me. The big guy is awesome, though.

Without saying too much, I would say that Brian Cranston was under-utilized. And *all* of the characters, top to bottom, were very nondescript and utilitarian. And inasmuch as you want cool action stuff and giant monsters, then that's fine, I suppose. I liked it, no doubt, and some parts are amazing, but I got a sense of how much better it might have been with some more colorful writing and characters. When I think of summer blockbusters like Jurassic Park and the Avengers, sure they had great action scenes, but the writing was also very sharp. Here there's *nothing* at all memorable about the script or characters. Nothing. Well, inasmuch as Godzilla is the titular character, sure, he's cool. But he has very little screen time and only one word of dialogue ("Blaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!").
