Ron Beron Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Groups that were my favs... Kingston Trio... New Christy Minstrels (loved them!)... Four Freshmen... really good music to sing along, to dance to... to romance to... and then the Beatles came and music took a turn, and the rest is history... I pulled several movies to watch last night... Amistad was one of them... but then I noticed The Buddy Holly Story was going to be on... I'll watch Amistad tonight... what a story... GGDon't forget La Bamba.
Tacenda Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 I feel it very appropriate to have gone and seen "Is Heaven Real?" on Good Friday, without even planning it!And guess what? The song they played over and over was "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing"! I loved the movie, just what the doctor ordered. The little boy that played Colton was phenomenal. Go see it, just to see him. 1
Tacenda Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Skimming through movies on Netflix and came upon "Heart and Souls" with Robert Downey Jr. I remember seeing this at the movies. Such a great film. If anyone has Netflix, it's a good one.
saemo Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 (edited) "Robot and Frank", on Netflix. The latest "Captain America", in the theatre. I liked both. Redford in Captain America? Who knew. Edited April 25, 2014 by saemo

Ron Beron Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I have just watched "Saving Mr. Banks". What a delightful film. I have always liked Emma Thompson and this film shows why. I read later that when Ms. Travers passed she loved no one and no one loved her. I hope this isn't true. I can imagine that Mr. Disney and many thousand others loved her and her characters. Check out Thomas Newman's music for this film. Very nice.

I too found the film delightful, and believe they tried to bring out Ms Travers' personal demons from a difficult childhood that affected her the rest of her life, influencing her perspective and attitudes... I found it touching that there really was a "Mary Poppins" in her young life... GG 1
Garden Girl Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I watched "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" with Ben Stiller... a remake of the original late 40's/early 50's version starring Danny Kaye...I was very disappointed in this film... I couldn't quite get into Stiller's character or the events surrounding his "daydreams." If I hadn't seen the origninal, it would have made this film more interesting to me. I can still remember and laugh at Kaye'a daydream antics and the story was much more adventuresome.... and more comical because of course that was Kaye's forte. There's nothing wrong with the film... good family fare... but for me it goes the way of a lot of remakes of older films... GG

GG I saw it and loved it. But it's very true that when we fall in love with an earlier version of a film, it makes it almost impossible to really like a new adaptation. I feel that way about all the remakes that i have seen.

Deborah Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 The Pellet with the Poison was one of the funniest scenes in movie history. Only Danny Kaye could pull it off. 1
Garden Girl Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Saturday I rented "The Ledge," an intense film about a man who is going to commit suicide by jumping from a building... and the policeman (Terrance Howard) who was sent to try and talk him down. What unfolds is the jumper's story of what brought him to this point... and there is a subset story about the police officer... both are compelling.I won't be a spoiler and tell any more because it is too good a suspense... I will give a warning that there is a brief scene of nudity/sexual content... and a few words of profanity. but nothing purposely salacious. In fits in the context of the story although IMO they could have done quite well without the questionable scene. I really wasn't expecting it in the detail shown. GG
Ron Beron Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I have been on such a movie watching kick lately since I got Netflix. I've been going through any John Wayne they have, followed Gregory Peck (Gentleman's Agreement), some vintage sci-fi, and miscellaneous documentaries. I have insomnia so it has worked out well...except when I do fall asleep and konk my head on my desk. I fell off my chair the other day. Not only am I getting older, but clumsier.

GA is one of my absolute favorites... another of the same vintage is Ten North Frederick starring Gary Cooper... real stories!! And Gregory Peck in Duel in the Sun... Joan Crawford in Mildred Pearce... Barbara Stanwyck in Stella Dallas... Hope Lange in The Best of Everything... Orson Wells in Jane Eyre... Lana Turner in Green Dolphin Street... Montgomery Clift in A Place In the Sun... Jennifer Jones in Madame Bovary... Ronald Reagan in King's Row...Oh, look for John Wayne in Donovan's Reef... The trouble is, some of these may not be on DVD... which is a shame... does Netflix have VHS also?Anyway, I too get insomnia at times... usually don't turn in until about 2:00 a.m. to begin with... it's 1:00 a.m. here now... guess I'll go catch the news before calling it a day... GG

GGI have seen most of these, esp., Wayne and Peck. Unfortunately, no one deals in VHS anymore.
Walden Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Went and watched "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" this weekend with my 6 & 8-year old sons. The boys enjoyed the movie, I thought that it was very average. The movie was not much different than the Spider-Man movies that came out a few years back with Tobey McQuire, not much new to get excited about. The more I see these comic book movie reboots, the more I am fascinated by the recent Batman movies from Christopher Nolan, which were so unlike any Batman franchise that came before it, and so much better than the previous franchise started by Tim Burton.
Grudunza Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I agree that the Dark Knight trilogy kind of transcends the genre. Just really great *films* that also happen to be superhero related. A lot of the Marvel films are pretty solid, too, but they're starting to all blur together for me.
Deborah Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 My favorite super hero movies are Captain America and the new batman. I saw the new Spiderman too, it was ok but not one I'll want to own.
Deborah Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Looking forward to the new Veronica Mars movie that just came out in DVD. Loved the series. And JACK IS BACK!
altersteve Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 I had mixed feelings about the new Spider-Man movie. I'm a big fan of superhero movies, but many of them are at their best during the quiet, dramatic, and more introspective moments -- like this movie. A pivotal scene between Peter Parker and his Aunt May, as well as the ending, nearly moved me to tears, but the action scenes left me feeling very underwhelmed. The movie has an outstanding cast, though: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Chris Cooper are all wonderful actors. I just wish they had a more focused script to work with.
Grudunza Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Not a movie, per se, but I recently watched the 25th anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera, which was fantastic. I've seen the show live before in Toronto, and the theatrical movie version was okay, but this was excellent. And at the end, they have all the Phantoms from the various productions come out and sing together, along with Sarah Brightman. Good stuff. It's on Netflix now, btw. Also saw Walter Mitty, which I thought was great fun.
