Pyreaux Posted October 31, 2022 Posted October 31, 2022 Favorite Scary movie, anyone? Mama (2013) Some scary movies are lame because they just do loud noises and jump scares, because Marlyn Manson as a nun is just not scary enough without it. When you see something on screen that gets scarier the more it remains on screen, you know its special. Before that it was Darkness Falls made me scared of dark portions of partly lite rooms. Or in the dark, it made me see things in the corner of my eye, like an ivory mask... There are these short Independent Films available on youtube, it's not jump scary or gory, its "Analog Horror" (retro VCR film and found footage) (warning: Some Language, suicide themes, religious themes) Mandela Catalog Vol. 1 Overthrone Intruder alert M.A.D. Mandela Catalog Vol. 2 Mandela Catalog Vol. 333 -----Explanation Videos---- Film Theory - Don't Believe His Lies Film Theory - Do Not Fear Him

PG-13 so it doesn't have the gore or language, and the story is dumb enough that the scary doesn't carry over in real life, but it's got some good scares while you are watching it. For old school scary the original Salem's Lot is hard to beat. You won't want to look out of a window at night for a long time after that.

Based on the trailer, I went into this sequel with pretty low expectations. That likely contributed to my overall feeling about the film. I ended up thinking it was certainly better than the trailers made it out to be, but (unfortunately) it was still noticeably worse than the original. Not unwatchable or anything, but certainly not one that I anticipate returning to regularly in future years. Still, it was kind of fun to see the Sanderson sisters milling around Salem again. And they left the ending open for another film...though I doubt Bette Midler can afford to wait another 30 years for one more round (unless she really is a witch). I was forced into watching this last night and yeah, it wasn't worth the time. Sequels shouldn't exist unless the plot of the first movie allows a sequel to make sense AND the new movie has a plot that is equally good as the first one. This failed on both accounts.

If I were to pick a personal favorite, I would probably go with something classic like Wait Until Dark. That being said, the one my wife and I tend to fall back on most frequently is What Lies Beneath?

I mean, I know I've wasted more time on movies that were worse, but that's not much of an endorsement. 1

My brain chemicals must be of the less fun variety when scared.

I hate that kind of adrenaline.

So after you watch the movies and you get overly wary of dark corners and strange noises, is that still a good adrenaline or do you wish you had skip the movie after all?

I don’t watch any that are going to keep affecting me after they are over. I learned long ago that those are no fun. Edited November 1, 2022 by bluebell 2

"Play Misty for Me" with Clint Eastwood is the kind of horror movie that will scare me the most, something that can really happen. I saw this as a teenager and it scared me, my sisters and mom big time. But I still jump at the stupidest scary movies that aren't as realistic as well.

If it's not on any of the the streaming services I pay for, I stream from pirate sites. I also do that for content I pay for, because pirate sites are a lot less frustrating (when visited w/ ad blocking). Edited November 1, 2022 by Chum 1

I like that it's trying to do something fairly new, even though some of the moon-culture stuff is just laughably absurd and (on balance) probably ends up getting in the way of the show. For better (current) TV sci-fi, I would recommend taking a look at Foundation - unless you are the kind of person who can't stand deviations from the original source material. And probably the best, still-airing sci-fi show right now would have to be For All Mankind. I am very much looking forward to season four (likely still another year away). 1

Other times it requires you to be more "meta", you step outside the film and take the side of the Big Bad and see their victims as the fodder that they are intended to be, explore the threat the villain poses. If you take the people's side, you are going to be upset when something happens to most of them. Let the big Bad take its toll before it gets its comeuppance. If you can't watch Clifford (1994), a comedy, as a comedy, it requires taking Clifford's side against his uncle, but if you take the uncle's side, Clifford will stress you out. Thanks for the info…might be worth it to add the service if we don’t already have it (my husband tends to add stuff without telling me, and then forgets that he has).

I thought the books were kind of plodding and the series was pretty good. To be fair to Azimov, after I plowed thru Known Space, Foundation couldn't really compete. I did enjoy Azimov's non-fiction essays tho. Reread those a lot. 9 hours ago, Amulek said: And probably the best, still-airing sci-fi show right now would have to be For All Mankind. Can't argue with this. I'd put FAM up against Counterpart. Counterpart blows it away early but FAM's storyline is way more durable. 1

Tacenda Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 The movie "Till" was very stirring and I was almost shivering as I watched the true story of the lynching of Emmett Till, didn't know much about the story until now. I know many out there will say it's all about Hollywood introducing the critical race theory and probably down it. But it's not a new thing that we learn about the bad and the good in US history. I thought of a few movies or series such as "Sounder", and "Roots" etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkQi6GBwmSA

It’s probably good to remember how evil “upstanding citizens” can really be under the right circumstances. 3
edvantageous Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 [This is mostly a post to open up my ability to post in other threads -- think i read that somewhere and it's the only select-able option anyway.] It has been a couple of months since I saw the movie, so the specific reasons to trust this online stranger's opinion are now forgotten but I left the theater thinking I would like to see this again, which happens so rarely that I trust there were good reasons for it. If you haven't seen Three Thousand Years of Longing, I can recommend it. As for the R rating: it seemed highly unearned. I recall some brief non-sexualized nudity and maybe a f-word or two but way more tame than what's offered via streaming.
