In six short days, the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still will appear in theaters. Starring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, John Cleese, Kathy Bates and John Hamm, this remake of the 1951 sci-fi thriller will focus on manâ??s role in global warming, and the repercussions of natureâ??s fury.

Now I donâ??t mind being preached to in movies. (I suppose the 1951 movie focused on the concerns of its day.) But what I find disconcerting is the consistent theme weâ??re hit with that man can somehow make a difference in weather variations that have been going on for millennia.

In the original movie, Klattu was a Christ figure. He came among men adopting the name on a suit of clothes he had pilfered, which coincidentally, was â??Carpenter.â? He uses his presence on Earth to warn men of the dangers of hate and war; he was killed and then brought back to life by Gort, the giant robot.

The trinity of the powerful spaceship, which is the source of the power that brings Klattu and Gort to this planet, strips Earth of its electrical power for an hour (except hospitals and planes in flight), the giant robot and, of course, Klattu, himself, are unmistakable, and even Klatuu admits to the existence of an all-powerful creator.

In 2008â??s movie, Iron Man, there is enough war and errant technology to show that itâ??s still an enormous potential of manâ??s undoing, and one man does have complete control over. But this version of The Day the Earth Stood Still puts most of the onus of global warming on the shoulders of men, when science has clearly not made the jump there. Current thinking suggests that weâ??ll either enter a warmer future of eroding ice caps or a renewed ice age, no one is certain which. Still, with people dying in wars the world over, Klattuâ??s 2008 mission is â??to assess whether humanity can prevent the environmental damage they have inflicted on their own planet.â?

We know from the revelations of God that nature and war result, both, from manâ??s refusal to live the commandments. And even if it could be shown that man somehow could control the weather, why is it that the onus is constantly put on the United States, when emerging powers like China show not the slightest interest in the problem. Instead, like the Russians, they seem to be preparing for war and threaten the worldâ??s oil supplies if they can't get energy any other way.

Sadly, Hollywood doesnâ??t want man to improve himself morally and spiritually, but pursues more politically correct agendas when history has shown that climate is more cyclical than manmade.

And all the robots from here to the moon wonâ??t change it.

The Late Michael Crichton in one of his books (If forget the title) the whole plot is on global warming he addresses both sides of the issues and even cites published scholars. It was his opinion that global warming is not a true threat but is stirred up more because it is a cash cow for certain people and groups.

As I have looked into and studied some many of the ideas of GW I subscribe to Mr. Crichton's view. IMO global warming is a minor concern but not a catastrophic disaster... I also believe it has become a $ generator for people and groups.

This reminds me of the mid70's when I was at Univ of CA, Riverside, as part of the Agricultural Experiment Station... at that time the western United States was fighting to control the crop devestating Pink Bollworm from invading our cotton fields of California's Imperial Valley, which borders Mexico. We had strict "plow down" regulations, and even used a satellite (ERTS... Earth Resources Technology Satellite) and infrared monitoring to assure compliance as one of many efforts of U.S. govt, science, and agriculture working together. However, Mexico as I recall, was not putting forth the same effort at the time toward regulation and control, and eventually the pink bollworm started increasingly showing up in the Imperial Valley. I don't know what measures if any were subsequently added on their part... I just know the fight, then, for us, became "Keep the pink bollworm from moving up to the San Joaquin Valley" in central Calif., or at the very least control it.

Even if the U.S. contributes 25% to "global warming," there's another 75% contributed by others who do not try and exercise the same regulation and controls as we do...

Global warming may very well be a real threat--but it is clear that some grasping, greedy people are pushing it to make money and their efforts IMO, are an affront to God. Knowing how he loves his children and made this world for us and we are to be grateful to him for the very air we breathe, does anyone think he would be happy with efforts by some to TAX the carbon emissions that come from us when we exhale? They want to take God out of everything. Rather than recognizing God and thanking him for the air we breathe, we are to pay the Govt. and acknowledge the Govt. for allowing us breath. Satan's dirty little fingers are unmistakable in the whole Stop Global warming "pie".

Is there any correlation between sun spots, cosmic rays, cloud formation, the Earth's magnetic field, and global climate variation? Is there anything man can do to affect any of those things?

I honestly believe that we should take care of the environment, but I am tired of hearing the cry of "WOLF!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!!" all the time when there aren't any wolves around.

Your numbers are estimates from the the pro global warming crowd and have been disputed by reputable scientists. As a matter of fact some believe that the earth is comming out of a mini ice age and that the warming numbers are a result of the tempatures normalizing from this. Back in the 1970's the fear was not global warming but that we were slipping back into an ice age. If you will look you will find that temperatures generally over the past few years have been steady to cooler by a degree or two. Some of this globes areas are warmer but some are cooler. More like a realignment of temerature zones. I do think we are responsible to care for our environment but this chicken little attitude accomplishes nothing constructive.

The history of the world has reflected numerous ice ages followed by warming trends followed by more ice ages. But then we see the Kyoto Treaty, which would have decimated our economy and reduced the U.S. to a third-rate power, while not limiting the Chinese and other emerging powers. I've even read where cow farting may be contributing to the problem!

The world's climate has been warming since the days of Joseph Smith. I recall living in L.A. for awhile and after rain, the sky would clear and things would be fresh until the cars and industry polluted the atmosphere again. Industry throughout the U.S. has been steadily becoming cleaner over the last few decades, yet global warming is accelerating. Why would that be? And why are some scientists warning that the ice caps will melt and flood London, Washington, D.C., etc., and other scientists predict that we face another ice age? Shouldn't these guys be saying the same thing?

Repentance would do far more good than cutting back on our driving and not letting Hollywood turn this country into its personal intellectual sewer would do far better than plugging up cows.

I think China and India shoot up much more than we do. And the fact that that is proportional to our GDP as a nation is rather telling too. We make somewhere between one fourth and one fifth of all the goods and services in the world, or about 20 to 25 percent.

While it is too much that we put up, any deal cutting our emissions should be responded to in kind by the Chinese and the Indians, as well as the rest of the civilized world.

But hey if you don't buy the man made global warming thing you must hate nature, want children to starve and love to throw garbage out of the window of your SUV. The early 1800's should have been disaterous (sp) in the western and mid-western US with all the buffalo roaming around emitting greenhouse gasses. Some reports that some of the herds were so large that it took several days for them to pass.

Whether global warming is true or not, God tells us we are to be good stewards, and a good steward does not intentionally pollute that which he has stewardship over, or use up the resources he has stewardship over with no regard for future generations.

I'm Doing My Inconsequential Part For The EnvironmentExcerpt:Every day, without fail, I meticulously organize my recyclables into five distinct categories, thereby subtracting an eyedropper's worth of garbage from the countless tons of waste that ferment in our landfills. It only takes a few extra minutes, but just think of the impact it totally lacks. I also refuse to use anything but "Earth-friendly" paper productsâ??some of which contain up to 10 percent recycled materials. For me, it's worth shouldering the extra cost, but, unfortunately, only a scant few of us bother to do the same. And growing some of my own organic vegetables in my backyard garden also, to my immense gratification, reduces the use of toxic chemical-based pesticides and herbicides present in corporate farming techniques by as much as 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001 percent.These quixotic, Sisyphean efforts are my way of dealing with what is perhaps the most crucial and difficult issue of our time.

I'm undecided on global warming and environmentalism. In the original story Klaatu came to tell Earth that Galactic society wasn't going to let us remain warlike when we expand to the stars, and that the robot enforcers of his society would destroy our whole planet if we tried it. The basic motive was to prevent us from infringing on our more civilized neighbors or damaging their property - to prevent us from exporting war.

Why would galactic society care if we destroy just our own planet? It's no skin off their noses. In fact in the original, galactic society seems perfectly willing to destroy individual planets to keep the peace.

Hmm, a group changing a classic of science fiction to forward their own agenda. Why does that sound so familiar?

As for the "Global Warming Threat," yes it is "man-made" it was a man who made up this unassailable political weapon to try to convince an otherwise reasonably intelligent free people to turn over their freedoms to a totalitarian political power without a struggle. However I do believe in the following type of "global warming" but I am sure it is not espoused by our leftist friends:

So it appears that the earth will pass away by fire and heat, but I doubt it will be through auto emissions or factory smoke... The interesting thing is I have never heard a prophet of God declare that we should stop driving our evil automobiles and start on a handcart expedition to church. I realize in our modern 21st century we must all bow before the altar of politico-pseudo-science or be called a fool or a "flat-earther" but I am unconvinced that we can really do anything permanent to destroy the earth... we can pollute it and make it filthy, but it can be cleaned up, even if God must do it by fire. Some in the extreme-enviromental movement think that God has no power to correct anything man can do, (in fact most probably believe God does not exist) and that we have the arrogance to think that we puny mankind can actually control the weather or climate, it reminds me of the "Rain-makers" hucksters who promised poor farming communities rain during the dust-bowl era (again correcting a "man-made" problem) and could do nothing to solve the drought.

As for the original movie I thought it was a "Cold War" parable that tried to teach peace in the threat of the recently developed nuclear bomb... so yeah since the cold war threat has ended and it would be politically incorrect to tie in the War of Terror... then why not point the finger of scorn at those unpopular "Capitalist Pigs" and how they want to destroy the world!
