Your belief that massive numbers of credible, degreed scientists are all plotting and conspiring to make fraudulent scientific claims in order to control the world and destroy our precious constitutional right to drive Hummers is, frankly, nuts.

The reviews so far of this movie have not been kind.

There was one by Victor Olliver though that made me laugh-

"Keanu Reeves plays Klaatu with all the expressiveness of a wok. I have never seen a wok better portrayed."

Interestingly enough, rottentomatoes considered the above review 'fresh' rather than 'rotten'.

Hyperbole or no, the fact is that scientists are human, and have any of or many of a vast number of motivations for doing anything.

Many climatological scientists work for universities and other government agencies. They depend on grants for their survival. Getting a grant is not a matte of serching for "truth", it is a matter of satisfying the person or agency making the grant that this person's (or agency's) position is valid. So scientists are academic whores: they sell their research to the highest bidder, and if that bidder wants global warming, global warming is what they will get.

Scientists who works of oil companies are lambasted for their findings all the time because their critics see that work as "tainted" by their employers; interests. The same (aside from the lambasting) is true of government-funded science: it is just as tainted, perhaps more so because there is so much more money involved.

Yes it was, and quite preachy about it (and unsubtle in its allusions as well - Klaatu was an obvious Christ figure even without adopting the alias of "John Carpenter").

I still find the environmental message more lame than the anti-nuclear war message of the original. Preventing a warlike species from spreading their adolescence throughout the galaxy is reasonable.

A species that wipes itself out because of how it mistreated the environment is self-correcting.

I prefer Dr. Strangelove for my nuclear war activism. "Love the bomb."

While fantasy and Sci-fi lend themselves well to sharing ideas when they're explicit they tend to suck. You can read an anti-nuke message into Tolkien and a moral message into Star Wars but that's not why either the book or the movie came about.

The very end where they are giving their report in the auditorium...I'm in the crowd cheering...too bad I can't be seen. However, they did film significant portions of that movie at my high school in Scottsdale (Coronado HS...it doubled as San Dimas High).

The movie 'far and away' (cruise and kidman) was filmed around my area and i knew a few who were extras in the scene at the end with the giant race for land in 'oklahoma'. Most people have no idea that montana isn't all covered with mountains and pine trees.

The fancy house the couple broke into during the snow storm when they were starving is a prominent historical landmark-and it's not all that fancy on the inside actually.

Pull your head out of the clouds. I respect you, but man only 20% of people even think that man caused the so called "man made global warming". It is all a ploy to redistribute the wealth through taxes. No one denies that the earth has warmed. Now that it has been cooling since 1998, what do you propose? The idea that man has caused to any warming trends is a hoax. Plain and simple. Let look at the sun, there was great solar activity when the warming trend occoured, now that it is colling there are no sun spots and the activity is running down.

I didn't get to meet anyone. That auditorium was literally full, and we were just basically there to stand up and cheer when Abe Lincoln said "Party on DUDES!" I got sick of hearing him say that over and over again.

Tolkien's message is a distinctly Catholic one, and the first Star Wars was an homage to Flash Gordon.

I'm sure you noticed that hand is holding the Earth. The title of the movie is The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Having never seen the film, I cannot say, but it could be a metaphor for the power that stopped the Earth, as a backdrop for the woeful people and the spaceman with his prey (or the saved victim).
