Scott26.2 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Have any of you received the e-mail that tells of President Packer standing up at a fast and testimony meeting in the Forest Bend Ward in SLC on Oct 12 and saying among other things "It's about time the Lord taught us a lesson, a great catastrophe is coming." The "message" is quite long and speaks of our need to be chastened as the nephites of old because of pride and wickedness. It sound unbelievable, I can't imagine it is real. But does anyone have any information in the matter? Anyone actually there? Can we assume for sure it is folklore?Scott26.2 (newbie)
Duncan Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 According to the Church website there is no "Forest Bend" ward or stake. So I think its a dud.
Jason Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 If President Packer has an important warning that should be given to the whole Church then he will give it to the whole Church, not just a single ward.
Gillebre Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 actually, yes there is a Forest Bend Ward.edit: to locate it on the Church website meetinghouse locator (maps.lds.org), do a search for:7784 South 2000 East in Salt Lake City, Utah
creightonian Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Yes, not only is there a Forest Bend ward, but it happens to be his home ward-no big surprise that he would show up there.I have lived in this Stake and Pres. Packer is known to show up at the wards unannounced to participate. I'll never forget the week he came to our Elder's Quorum lesson which just happened to be on the process of sucession when a President of the church passes away. I really felt for the instructor that day! It would not surprise me if Pres. Packer did speak, maybe mentioning the conditions of the world today and how they are similar to conditions that have existed before. He may have even mentioned what happened to the earlier societites. I would be greatly surprised, however, if he actually told the congregation it was about to happen to us. I would think, rather, that someone made that assumption in their mind and "put those words in his mouth"It seems to me if there really was a catatrophe on the way General Conference would have been a more appropriate setting for him to share that news.My 2 cents
Marmonboy Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 My co-worker's cousin's sister-in-law's boyfriend was there, and it really happened!!Ya think?

I seriously doubt this rumor is credible. Generally Church leaders shy away from gloom and doom predictions since they are sensitive to the overeaction of some members.
sean0scott Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I get lots of kooky emails.I also get lots of letters from the brethren read to me over the pulpit; once I heard one that said we shouldn't pass along our notes or personal accounts of what the brethren say as being official. If he bore testimony about a catastrophe to the forest bend ward, I assume it was for the forest bend ward.Maybe all of the members will decide to hand out those gross peanut butter taffies at the their ward trunk or treat.

Would this apply only to LDS, since this is who he was addressing? If it was intended for all the world shouldn't there be a proclamation?
ERMD Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Given that I was a general in the war in heaven and that all spirits will bow down to me when they find out that I lived during Pres Hinckley's tenure as Prophet, I think I have nothing to worry about.

Duncan Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 The Church should update its address thing, I stand corrected!
Tchild2 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 You don't need Elder Packer to say that "doom and gloom" is here or coming, you just have to look for yourself. Kind of like Joseph Smith and the Civil war prophecy; the signs are all around you and it doesn't require prophecy to read them.
cinepro Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Wait, is this October 12 2008? Because if there is a whole ward of people in SLC who didn't already know that the poop is hitting the fan, then I'm not sure they deserved to have an apostle come and tell them.

Tchild2 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Typical Tchild cheap shot.Typical Jwhitlock overreaction. There was nothing cheap about my comments. I am sweating bullets because of this economic downturn and I have seen the train wreck coming for years...sans prophet. Or like Moses and "Thou shalt not kill."Come on prophets, start dazzling us or we'll martyr you!Are you suggesting that I or another might kill? I find that very disturbing and hope that you would retract that comment. Why would I kill or even harm someone who doesn't know, or couldn't predict the future? I just ignore them like I do the Tabloid magazines at the supermarket. No need to hurt anybody.Edited to add, I actually lived in Elder Packer's ward when I was active and newly married. I really liked him, and remember him coming over to our house more than once to say hello....well, he was coming over to say hello to the widow of Theodore Tuttle where we lived, and just got us answering the door by chance.
sean0scott Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Why would I kill or even harm someone who doesn't know couldn't predict the future? How should I know, I can't tell the future.....
Tchild2 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 How should I know, I can't tell the future..... What brought you to even consider than someone might wish violence on your leaders? I hope you aren't projecting yourself onto others, because that just came out of the blue.

Funny how you change your perspectives with hindsight, and then sniff about how you saw it all along - just like you claim prophets do.Except it appears prophets do something quite a bit different than your revisionist methodology.
