cartoon bluejay Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I agree. However, this interpretation of objectification makes its occurrence vanishingly rare. How many girl-ogling lechers would find the same specimen equally arousing if she was dead? Even if the mind isn't at the top of the list of priorities, it's definitely on the list. The word "objectification," therefore, is of little use, since those actually guilty of objectifying women (necrophiliacs, guys who hump blow-up dolls) are actually an inconsequential minority. The way I see it - sexual objectification means that the emphasis on the value of a woman (or a man) is placed on physical appearance or sexuality, while who the person is on the inside is ignored. Both men and women are guilty of this. Women definitely objectify themselves. I don't have a problem with viewing the human body as an art form as long as both bodies (male & female) are viewed as such and it represents art and not sex. Many supporters of porn would argue that it's a form of art. I would argue it is definitely not. But I admire the Statue of David and consider it art - I don't think by so doing I'm objectifying the male body. I'm appreciating it and appreciating the artist. I'm also seen many nude painting of both men and women. It's beautiful - it's art. It's sacred. I also don't think that getting turned on by someone of the opposite sex or the same sex (for that matter) indicates that you are objectifying anyone. I just think that when those feelings are suppressed they then become difficult to understand. Too often we say that married men and women are to no longer be sexually attracted to anyone else, afterall that leads to infidelity. I think suppressing the attractions leads to misunderstanding the urges which leads to poor decision making when faced with the feelings. Being aware of the feelings leads to understanding them and being able to make good decisions sexually.
kamenraider Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I asked my wife what she thought about this thread and she was like, "He wouldn't have been any less attracted to her if she had been wearing a one piece suit rather than a bikini". I explained that he thought that maybe she was partly responsible because she wore an immodest swimsuit and she said, "Gimme a break -- he shouldn't try to blame her just because he's a horndog".
MorningStar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Here's a question. Let's say there are two women on the side of the road with flat tires - one is in a bikini and one is in a business suit. Which one would you help first and why?
structurecop Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Here's a question. Let's say there are two women on the side of the road with flat tires - one is in a bikini and one is in a business suit. Which one would you help first and why?Are they in the exact same location?
MorningStar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Are they in the exact same location?Yes, and they're identical twins! Both of them ran over the same sharp object in the road and got a flat. Or something.
MorningStar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Are they ugly or attractive, or what? They're beautiful.
kamenraider Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 What kind of car does each of them have?Is the one in the bikini driving an old VW Beetle and the other one a BMW or something?
The Nehor Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I'd probably call the press and pose for pictures with both of them. Two twins having the same accident on same road on same day. Nice human interest story. Then I'd take them both out to dinner and date the one I liked more figuring that the one in the business suit looks the same way underneath. If they refuse or are both jerks at least I'd have the newspaper photo and a funny story to tell.
kamenraider Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Hypothetically, I think I might help the one in the business suit first (especially if she had a nicer car) since she might be more likely to give me a tip.Actually, if I were in a hurry I might not stop at all, figuring that the one in the business suit would probably have a cell phone and call the AAA Auto Club or something.
MorningStar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 What kind of car does each of them have?Is the one in the bikini driving an old VW Beetle and the other one a BMW or something? They both drive Ford Tempos.
kamenraider Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 If I were single and the same age as the twins, I s'pose I might help the one in the bikini first.
MorningStar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 If I were single and the same age as the twins, I s'pose I might help the one in the bikini first. Why?
kamenraider Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 She might be less uptight than the one in the business suit. However, if she were smoking or dinking or had tattoos or non-ear piercings (that is if she seemed too much like a party animal) then I might help the one in the business suit first.

However, if she were smoking or dinking or had tattoos or non-ear piercings (that is if she seemed too much like a party animal) then I might help the one in the business suit first. The one in the business suit is doing her Janet Reno impression and the one in the bikini has a gigantic Darwin fish tatoo on her lower back. Now which one do you want to help?

Now which one do you want to help?I would help the one in the bikini first because I have enough professionalism to treat her the same as the other one. That way, no hormonal scumbag will have an opportunity to pull over and make her feel uncomfortable. Then I would help her sister. I'm sure her sister would understand (or be offended, I really wouldn't care).

LifeOnaPlate Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I am a little disappointed this thread goes 14 pages while other great stuff slinks to the depths of the board never to be seen again.
Hoops22 Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I am a little disappointed this thread goes 14 pages while other great stuff slinks to the depths of the board never to be seen again. Well some of us we're hoping for further descriptions of the girl in the green bikini so we kinda kept it going for that. But I blame LDS for all of it.
SolarPowered Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I wish President Hinckley along with the "earrings, one pair" would've added "No String Bikinis either!"OK, that's an image I didn't need. .

But I blame LDS for all of it.When did the bikini become green? I missed that plot point. It continues to unfold piece by piece. Keep it up.
asbestosman Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Here's a question. Let's say there are two women on the side of the road with flat tires - one is in a bikini and one is in a business suit. Which one would you help first and why?The one in a business suit since she's more likely to have money to pay for an expensive thank you dinner.Anyhow, string bikinis just don't do it for me. It's what's inside that counts . . . and yes, that goes for business suits too.
Thinking Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I am a little disappointed this thread goes 14 pages while other great stuff slinks to the depths of the board never to be seen again. Wow! We agree on something.
LifeOnaPlate Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Wow! We agree on something. The thread that brings you and I together, my friend. And if you and I agree on it, come on, we have to be right, dude. This makes it more bittersweet.
Zoidberg Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I agree. It must have been one of those days (just like every other) when I have trouble expressing myself in a coherent manner. What I meant to say to Pantsman is that the line he's drawing when he thinks of a female body as "an art form" is artificial, so it's objectification in this sense, not him actually being attracted to dead bodies. He thinks he is able to appreciate the body without any regard to the person. I said his appreciation is only possible because there is a person there. So yes, the mind is always on the list, whether or not the ogler realizes that. Incidentally, a lot of the guys who hump blow-up dolls anthropomorphize them. The dolls are getting more and more realistic-looking, it's amazing! There was an article about it in Salon, I won't give a link, but you can easily find it. There is a movie coming out called Lars and the Real Girl, it's about a guy who seriously believes one of those dolls is a real person and takes it around everywhere, and the whole town goes along with it because that's what his therapist wants them to do. I want to go see it (serious).
