MustardSeed
I’ve heard of this book- But was recently inspired to read it by an acquaintance through work. I’m listening in audible. I let it read me to sleep- it’s a good one for that. But last night the main character meets with a Wise Man who is named Melchizedek who uses two truth stones called a “ureem and thumeem” (this is how the reader pronounces it)- i was nearly asleep and this jolted me awake. I’ve never heard these things outside of the BOM. I know I’m in poor company as I’m not well read in these matters. I can hear eyes rolling as I type. That is all. I’ve never heard these things outside of the BOM. ......................... The Hebrew pronunciation is ooreem we toomeem, in KJV form as Urim & Thummim (Exodus 28:30, Numbers 27:21, 1 Samuel 14:41, 28:6), which never appear in the Book of Mormon, although many confuse the Nephite Interpreters with them. They are not the same thing at all. John Calvin described the properties of the Urim & Thummim as follows: Quote The Urim was a conspicuous stone in the priestly dress, brilliant with a certain extraordinary light as even the word itself, which means brilliance, makes known. And this brightness of the stone was a sign of the prophecy to be received as necessity required, just as when God himself flashes in darkness in whom alone is all perfection and completeness. Hugh Nibley suggested a relationship with the Wr & Tm stones worn by the Wr-mЗw, the “Great Seer” of On (the High Priest at Heliopolis, Egypt). Nibley, Dialogue, 3/2:104. 7 Link to comment
rockpond
I loved that book. Really beautiful and inspiring. I need to put it back into my rotation and give it another read as it's been about a decade since the last time. 1 Link to comment

I watched a “Jeopardy!” episode years ago in which one of the questions pertained to the translation of the Book of Mormon. Alex Trebek pronounced Urim and Thummim in that manner. I suppose we Latter-day Saints are the ones with a quirky pronunciation. Link to comment

I've chuckled because I think someone responsible for questions is LDS because often there is a question pertaining to the CoJCoLDS... GG Link to comment

The Urim v’tummim from a Jewish source...https://www.templeinstitute.org/beged/priestly_garments-8.htm Compare with Joseph’s method of translating the Book of Mormon.
