Well he was a member of the board at one time, maybe still is. But doesn't participate here as much or at all anymore.

No way. 😱 Has John been on this board in the past? That's something else boy. The world is small place apparently.

He was active believing LDS at one time.

So this was way bevore he had his podcast? Yeah must be. He started his podcast after the church excomunicated him. And after that he probably wanted to show some kind of revenge against the LDS community. And decided to put his deal on youtube. I still don't fully understand what he did for type of pranks to reaches his excomunication.

Btw... in my last post i meant "the world is a small (place). Not "please" haha.

He had his podcast before he was ex'd. He just crossed the line so many times that the church ex'd him. He started out trying to help those that came across information that hurt their testimony to stay in the church. Even created the online discussion forum called, "StayLDS.com". Not sure if it's still around. It's where I discussed things and was when I was struggling with my testimony. It helped a lot but prefer this board because it has believing members that actually discuss the controversial history of the church and help me stay in basically, because they still believe even after knowing the subjects that caused me to doubt. :) If you want to edit your previous post to save posts, it's a great idea. :)

Also, if you were to go to John Dehlin's very first podcast you will see that. And some of his guests were actually LDS scholars and apologists, not often but a few. But nowadays it's rare for believing members to be on his podcast.

I've kept editing, sorry Dario. Here's a thought, maybe Dehlin would have been able to stay if he'd not been ex'd and come to change his mind. It's possible, there is a poster named Don Bradley that had a crisis of faith and became somewhat anti, until he found a way back to belief or faith. He's a poster here @DonBradley. And a LDS scholar. I attended an event where he spoke about his non belief and then his renewed belief. If you care to listen here it is, I was there in the audience. It was very helpful, and he did the full circle of belief. It was at a Sunstone symposium: https://sunstone.org/life-after-church-discipline/ He was ex'd just like John, but able to return. So maybe Dehlin should have been ex'd and then if he could find his way back.

Wow, if you understand any of this, you're great, because I'm all over the place with my thoughts.

Back in the day Dehlin started staylds dot com (Stay Latter-day Saint) as a website and forum for members to find ways to stay in the church after loosing a more traditional faith:

I might just have to delete all the confusion of a post with all my edits. This one is better with Don Bradley. It's a Fair presentation.

Oh really? Aawh yeah then i understand why the LDS community was getting fed up of his silly games. Maybe it was a good thing after all that the church excommunicated him. If he was bugging the church so much all the time. Then he was just asking for it.

That is what he claims yeah. I don't really believe in that.

I get that.🫂 The LDS community can be very demanding. That's aften the big mistake the church makes. And for some people it just gets to much. I totally can understand that

I have no idea how much post i still have left. I haven't post so much today so i think i have enough posts left. Btw i'm going to bed in a moment so this will be the last post for today.

I'm surprised to read that. I thought he was only willing to talk with ex mormons. You know...to kindly gossip with them about the LDS community. And that all of his audience could listen to their rant.

Anyway...i'm going to bed.🌌🌠 I'm so tired i can't keep my eyes open. Good day tacenda. 😌

No i don't think that John Dehlin is on the board. He is to busy with his podcast and briging the image of the LDS community down. God forbid. 🎭

He has posted in the past.  Trying to remember his alias (silly me, “Mormonstories” of course). It was mostly (all maybe, except for that one thread trying to make Dan Peterson and others look bad and making himself look virtuous when he tried to censor a review without having read it and only ending up looking like a jerk himself iirc for going after Dan right when his brother had died***) advertising for his website iirc though.

Probably not while he was on the board though. Even if that was the public persona.

I think it's not a secret that there are some people on the board who've left the LDS community. I won't call names offcourse.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean they are overly aggressive or obnoxious. That type doesn’t last too long on this board, thank goodness. Even the critics call them out for being disrespectful.

And some have a more negative viewpoint, at times very negative for some aspects of the Church, but just because comments are negative doesn’t mean they are any more aggressive than his own behavior or obnoxious.

Although he switched it up and said he was talking about John Dehlin and others who I don’t think are on this board so I’m confused.

Since he said “you and yours” it does appear he is lumping in Teancum? with that group.

I am not sure who he used the you and yours with.  He has used that or something similar with many posters iirc.

No, he was not a believer when he posted on the board.  My opinion is he was way past doubt and into disbelief by then, but was playing the game of honest questioner to make himself more palatable to the active LDS market, which was much, much bigger than the exmormon market back then.  I think once he figured out he could make enough money being more critical, he stopped trying so hard.  But given his interactions with FAIR and others things I heard about eons ago, I don’t trust any of his claims about still being open to the Church being what he said it was at least by the time I heard about him, which was before he joined the board (and no, I did not have such a strong bias against him back then, it takes a lot and usually a significant period of time of my observing behavior to get me to a “he’s a full out jerk” view).

No, the podcast started long before.  He started the podcast in 2005 and was excommunicated in 2015.  Iirc, I was expecting his excommunication from at least 2010 given how he talked about the Church on certain venues.

Frankly, I am shocked it took so long for him to get excommunicated given what he was doing.  But he had a very forgiving or hopeful stake president or bishop or both apparently.  There were probably quite a few hoping he would change his views and behavior.

I've not done the full circle yet, but I'm in a much better place. My ward needs to be split or I need to move into another ward because not sure if I'm a doubt germ in people's eyes that know about my struggle because of meeting with the bishop when first moving here in 2018, don't know if they pass things along to the next bishop.

I will for sure go back, hopefully sooner than later. I do miss church. Just don't want others thinking I'm there to cause trouble but hopefully they wouldn't think that. It's very easy, easier than I knew, to make excuses. I do love my CBS News Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley, haha. But I have two of the most darling dresses that I recently bought but haven't had a chance to wear! ;)

Not really.  The people he attacked were friends of mine, so the thread title sort of stuck in my head. (I knew it was names, so just typed a few of his targets and it was the second hit).

I like @smac97 but my point is he often protests that board members are directing personal insults at him and then he does the same thing by calling board members “aggressive and obnoxious” just because some have a more progressive viewpoint about the church.

I did not.

Who were you including in the “you and yours” phrase in this post?

Btw, I believe this is the part of your post that was seen as an attack.

Quote

which you and yours have said which are calculated to offend, provoke, profane, malign, etc. doctrines and principles and beliefs I hold most sacred, and you denigrate and insult people in whom I hold in high regard.

What did I misunderstand from your statement below? (Bold added by me)

No.  The commonality is the active opposition to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Some are secular, some sectarian.  Some are sociopolitically conservative, some are sociopolitically liberal/progressive (though I think the latter tends to be the more aggressive and obnoxious these days, at least on this board).

Ah.  I apologize.  I don't recall why I wrote that, as I did not have current posters on this board in mind.  The ones I did have in mind I listed previously.

Thanks,
