In terms of a story, this is kind of a fish out of water.

How do you see it as a fish out of water?  Even the commentator talked about how discovery of artifacts was frequently happening these days due to construction equipment, so it seems like it is a typical discovery story.

It seems spot on to many forgeries I have read about in the past (not that I am expert, so if someone wants to document where I am wrong, I will be happily corrected, always up for learning something new)….the hidden location, not releasing the names, just showing pictures of the treasure trove itself.  Insisting on not releasing more info until it’s authenticated but no sign of that happening, no mention of it in any actual news but all over the fundraising venues.  Nothing really novel yet time period appropriate visible but rather a collection of engravings/whatever that borrows from different actual artifacts.

I hope it turns out to be real, not for anything related to proving the Book of Mormon- but so that I can 🫵 and 🤣 at who automatically default to naysaying.

What difference would it make it being real to being cautious?  I don’t think anyone who is assuming it is a hoax, but if authentication proves it real will accept it is going to think your laughing is anything except you misunderstanding how such things are supposed to be done.

Will you also laugh if it turns out criminals are involved and that those who donated money for the cause have been defrauded?  My guess is no, but you seem to be ignoring that possible consequence.

That was meant to be more light-hearted than all that. You seem to take all my post extremely seriously.

I hope it turns out to be real too. I just assume it won’t.

I wish this approach worked:

It came across as mocking and that is not something I find amusing, so it looks like I took it too seriously. Glad you would never actually mock people.

I just think it's rather presumptive for anyone to make a definitive verdict either way from internet photos.

I think it is wise to make a presumptive verdict based on how it is being presented.

I am not watching those videos but from a quck jump around in them they seem to spend all their time talking about the find but not actually presenting it. Where are all the photos of the pages? The photos of the find from all angles? The photos of the site it was found in?

This is the kind of teaser you use when you don’t want any scrutiny.

Also is that photo to scale? If so, that is one TINY book.

I am not an expert on antiquity era writing but the pages they show look to me look like caricatures of medieval manuscripts.

Also:

Dr. Miles Jones has earned three degrees in languages and linguistics, culminating in a doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in 1985. He is the author of "The Writing of God", in which he translated ancient Hebrew inscriptions from Mount Sinai in Midian, Arabia. Their story speaks of events straight from the pages of Exodus. These inscriptions provided physical proof of the location of the real Mount Sinai, and that the “Writing of God” (Ex 32:16) was the original alphabet of letters!

LOL

Dr. Jones has uncovered the earliest Hebrew manuscript of the Gospels - and authenticated their first-century origin! The translation of The Hebrew Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - reveals a new depth of knowledge of our Hebrew Messiah, Yeshua Ha Mashiach. Heretofore, everything we know about our Hebrew Messiah has come down to us through the Greek filter of a different language, culture, and thought. Sons of Zion reveals a secret power given to the Hebrews upon Mt. Sinai and transferred to some degree to the Greeks. The subsequent history of the transmission of the Word has been the story of the war between the Sons of Zion vs Sons of Greece. The Hebrew Gospels were carefully preserved, and spread, by the original Messianic Church. The Hebrew Gospels and the Messianic Church were targeted for extinction by the Greco-Roman Church of Constantine.

This is the untold story of their miraculous survival!

Maybe that will end up being the ironic part of all this... "the fanatical, non-credible guy actually found something?"

Nope, people who make these kinds of crackpot discoveries don’t actually do any real field work.

I remember the guy who travelled all over the Middle East and found all kinds of ‘magical’ biblical artifacts like the ark of the covenant with angelic help but was never allowed to take photos or something.

Okay, the comparison to the Dead Sea Scrolls is a real stretch. The Dead Sea Scrolls were not all published for a long time not because people thought they were forgeries but because of the limited access most scholars had to the texts and the political complications over ownership and access. It also took a long time to try to piece many of the fragments back together.

None of those apply here unless Saudi Arabia insists on getting this thing back.

Their ‘we had two reputable scholars say this is almost certainly a fraud but then we have the shyster who found this and is drumming up business due to it saying it is authentic while also making outrageous and ridiculous claims about other bits of biblical history so the jury is still out’ is just silly. I wouldn’t be surprised if the academic community doesn’t bother to try to test it. I doubt the ‘owner’ would cooperate. He will say he wants to have it authenticated of course but will then dissemble and claim there are disagreements on terms of the examination and the like. It is a standard fraudster approach.

Also, both those guys have facial hair so they are clearly on the verge of apostasy anyways.

Half the guys in the Wards I've been to have facial hair. You've been out of the loop for awhile?

My stake is still trying to enforce the “rule” on some specific callings.

Also that was a joke.

I should add that there were a lot of accusations of forgery around some scrolls and fragments that people claimed were part of the Dead Sea Scrolls discoveriesand there were a lot of forgeries wandering around amongst black market dealers. The Museum of the Bible acquired a bunch of them. That is the same museum that got caught up in the Hobby Lobby artifact smuggling scandal just over a decade ago. There were other Dead Sea Scrolls forgeries being peddled all over the world.

Early in my faith or testimony issues, there was a gold plate or little book, now can't remember. It was around 2005 or so. It was claimed that it proved that something like the BoM gold plates could exist. It was shared on a LDS post somewhere. I saw it and it buoyed my testimony up, for a short while. But then it kind of disappeared. I tried to find an email where I shared it with family but it's no longer there. Can you remember something?

They said it is like having your palms together…the rings would be where the palms meet.  They must mean minus the fingers though.  They said the inches…4 iirc.

Utah wards tend to be more conservative than any others I have visited.  Pioneers and all that.

But all the pioneers had beards......

It all stems from the '60's when no one wanted to see a long haired bearded hippie for a Bishop. Years ago even California stakes had unwritten  rules against facial hair.  I was in one and decided to shave my mustache when I was called to be a Ward Mission Leader.

Nobody wanted to open their doors to a hippie on the porch.  ;)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Day

Quote

Pioneer Day is an official holiday celebrated on July 24 in the American state of Utah,[1] with some celebrations taking place in regions of surrounding states originally settled by Mormon pioneers.[2][3] It commemorates the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847,[4] where the Latter-day Saints settled after being forced from Nauvoo, Illinois,[5] and other locations in the eastern United States.[6] Parades, fireworks, rodeos, and other festivities help commemorate the event. Similar to July 4, many local and all state-run government offices[1] and many businesses are closed on Pioneer Day.[7]

In addition to being an official holiday in Utah, Pioneer Day is considered a special occasion by many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).[8][9] On Pioneer Day, some Latter-day Saints walk portions of the Mormon Trail or reenact entering the Salt Lake Valley by handcart.[10] Latter-day Saints throughout the United States[11][12] and around the world may celebrate July 24 in remembrance of the LDS Church's pioneer era, with songs, dances, potlucks, and pioneer related activities.[13][14]

I just have little faith in "reputable" scholars anymore.  The reputable scholars of the Americans have told us a whole bunch of stuff about the ancient Americans yet LIDAR technology has showed us a whole  world the missed.   Entire cities went under their noses and if it was not for LIDAR, these cities would still be unknown to the world forever.   If these scholars were doing the job of actually being curious and digging rather than being in classrooms and writing books, perhaps these cities that LIDAR found would have been discovered decades ago.

The LIDAR scanners didn't find those hidden cities, the scholars that sunk a lot of time and effort outside of the classroom to have those LIDAR scanners installed on airplanes that then flew back and forth over the jungles of Guatemala and the Amazon at incredible cost so they could then analyze the data found them.

Predictably it is when the original hippies are in the oldest demographics

Guess who started a topic similar to my quest to find the particular gold or bronze book or plate? Me! In googling to find the specific photo of what I found that helped my testimony, I found an old 2013 MDDB thread that I started. In it are a bunch of past posters that I miss seeing around here. :)

https://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/59903-plates-of-brass-vs-scrolls/

I wonder if it's in there somewhere since it had a lot of discussion with links to photos but I gave up reading through so many posts. The link you shared with photos doesn't ring a bell. But maybe it's in the thread I started back in 2013, and show the right one. I also wonder if the guys on Ward Radio that ZealouslyStriving shared, got the idea for their find from older photos and wonder what's real or not real. Since it's so simple to make gold plates. Found a video how to make something look gold plated.
