Most of the versions at Bible Hub don't mention Simon. Should they or did the KJV (or another version) add it? If the Simon should be there do we know which Simon this is? It probably does not belong there in this verse and was added in some versions because Iscariot is described in other verses as being the son of Simon. It is never specified who Simon is or if he is a Simon known in general history or mentioned elsewhere in the Bible but there is a lot of speculation of course.

I think it's the Simon who determines whether or not you should do something, like Simon says.

I sometimes use this Manuscript Comparator site (the link is to John 12:4). It shows the differences between the Westcott/Hort + Tischendorf 8th ed. v2.5 (Qere) manuscript and the Byzantine/Majority Text (2000) + Textus Receptus (1551) + Textus Receptus (1894), the latter is the source of the KJV translation. What surprises me, however, is that none of the more modern translations that I looked at (like the NIV) provide a footnote to this difference (usually they document the differences). In Bruce M. Metzger's, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament (United Bible Societies, Third Edition, 1975), Metzger says, "The identification of Judas as Σίμωνος [Simon’s']... or as Σίμων is a scribal accretion derived from 6.71." (p. 236) He also provides the rational for how the verse is shown in the USB edition, but there's too much Greek there for me understand everything he's saying (I'd say it's "all Greek to me", but what he says is not actually all in Greek, just the important parts) Edited February 13, 2021 by InCognitus 1
