Bill “Papa” Lee Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 First Question; Does the Church still print and make available previous study materials, for past courses of study? Such as... Institute manuals, for both University materials, local Stake and Ward study guides, Priesthood and Relief Society manuals, Past Sunday School manuals and study guides, For each of these to clarify; I ask if they are either in print for purchase, or on line for member use? I ask, because some may predate my membership, so I might not know what is available, or what “might” be available. Second Question; If previous materials are not in print or available; Why? I understand the need for change, and we are and should be a forward looking Faith and People, but are we not looking back enough? On a personal note, I am asking because a feel a need to do a lot more study as of late. My family has been asking me for a very long time to write, and to share many things about my life, via personal family history, poetry, inspirational stories from my past, etc. Also, due to an ever increasing and alarming amount of health issues, I feel an increasing urgency to do so in a number of areas, including genealogy, which I have been doing so more passionately than ever before. Maybe I am doing so out of unfounded urgency or worry, but no matter the source, it is time to honor my family’s request, as it turns out, there is much to say. Also keep me in your prayers, I am undergoing lots of tests, I have lost 25+ lbs since Christmas, and my doctors can’t figure out why yet. At 6’2”, and now down to 179 lbs, my family is very worried, so for their sakes, prayer would be great. I hope this remains in the General Discussion Forum, as I would like see and discuss the need for Church History, with our many changes as of late. It often seems that, be in in General Conference, and at our weekly meetings, that seem we don’t discuss these things as much. April General Conference is only three weeks away, so I will be listening and hoping to hear a little more about our rich history, interwoven with the our wonderful present, and our anticipated promising future. I may not be able to take part, as much as I have in the past, but I am and will be here in Spirit. 1

Or, you can probably find hard copies of many manuals at a local D.I. We just finished down-scaling my in-laws books (they moved from a 4000 SF house on farm property to a 1400 SF town house), and a lot of stuff went to the D.I. but not nearly enough. I love books. It makes me sad. But after the forced scale down of my in-laws, my wife would kill me if I brought home another book without getting rid of several others first. 1

As a ward librarian I saw once manuals ceased to be current, they stopped printing them and took them offline and we were instructed not to keep out of date materials in the library. That's one of the nice things about the Wayback Machine (this site: https://archive.org/web/) You can enter a URL (it has to be lds.org not churchofjesuschrist.org), and then pick a date to look at stuff. rpn Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 Yes, there are many seminary and institute and other manuals still available online (and probably some in print too, but you might have to call distribution directly as they may not still being advertised). You should also exercise some caution as there are both doctrinal misunderstandings and factual errors and in ones that aren't presently being used it is less likely such problems will be identified easily by readers, particularly newcomers. 2

Do you mean D.I., on line, our LDS Bookstore closed, as did most outside Utah.

Yes, local Deseret Industries (D.I.) stores may not be available in your area. In the western United States they are a good source for this kind of thing. And as I said I know several boxes of old manuals were sent to the D.I. here recently. Perhaps you could post a list of what you are looking for? If you have a specific list, we could find sources online or even someone else that has them. 1
