He appears in a youtube video with singer Bono who found his renditions of the Bible appealing. People brought up on the KJV might find his translation a bit irreverent. I like his writing of the psalms which I believe is a manner in which one can approach God raw and honest.

Eugene is now with the Triune God he has loved his entire life. But I’m not afraid, I’ll tell you that,” he said. It is not going to work out like he thought. His triune god won't be as triune as he thought. When he gets to the pearly gates, he'll get asked "would you like to accept a baptism on your behalf by Saints?"

I"m merely pointing out that he didn't know how it was going to work out - maybe the Lord liked his little retranslation of the Bible - I don't know. As for me I do know how it is going to work out for me. Will I be disappointed? I already am disappointed in many of my fellow Christians. Hopefully, they will learn a better way of being, and will become more open to the truths of the Bible rather than hanging onto the errant beliefs of men. 1

I am thankful of being led to truth even though I suffer for it. So, sue me.

I perused this thread and then immediately after, I selected the next podcast in order that I am listening to on a favorite site, and I was surprised that it turned out to be an interview of Eugene Peterson. I've always loved U2 - especially in its days of The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree. Bono has always impressed me as an artist trying to make a real connection with the audience - and here he is making a real connection with Mr Peterson. It does make me curious about Mr Peterson's Bible translation - since I've come to see many weaknesses in the KJV - I'm interested in seeing how Mr Peterson translates it. But, I don't think I will go out and buy The Message... 1

But, I don't think I will go out and buy The Message... It's not a translation in the sense that he went out and got as close as he could to the Greek or like that. But he is using vernacular for our day and time in the hopes that the Bible will be accessible to more. And the words he uses are more poetic than prose--using idiom, metaphor, context, situation that is contemporary rather than ancient. 1
Calm Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I think we will all be surprised when we hit the next life. I see no reason to assume that it is so simple that we have been able to learn enough through revelation that amounts, imo, to a few pages of text. It would be like assuming we knew what life was like for those in the Bible and Book of Mormon solely through scripture.

cipriano Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 The Message is an amazing piece of work. For some of us, Elizabethian English just doesn't make sense. For us, Eugene Peterson completed a great service.
