I don't believe agitation caused these appointments.  I believe outside agitation and concerns prompted President Nelson to pray for direction to address it.

I find it hard to believe it wouldn't have otherwise occurred to him -- which is the gist of stemelbow's "they finally listened to us" remark. A tad presumptuous, that.

Scott, you’re better than putting words in my mouth.  I appreciate jlhprof’s contributions here because they capture the spirit of the point I intended.  I agree with hin.  I did not say what you just put in quotes and pretended I said.

Here is a direct quote (see the first page of posts, near the bottom):

Quote

They finally listened!  I mean it took along time of digging in heels with the heels.

I beg your pardon for adding two extra words, "to us." Though I don't see that they made any appreciable difference.

To whom did you originally suggest "they" had listened to?

Apostles can be chosen from the general membership of the Church.

It would be logistically impossible to sort through millions of candidates.

Not to worry.   The entire church is incubating, ricocheting, cauldron.  The most seasoned and appreciated tend to rise slowly upward.  Like cream filtering up to the top.

Are we talking about church or are we talking about making stew from leftover Easter brunch ingredients?

Doctrinally speaking there is absolutely nothing saying the President of the Church can't look outside of the Quorum of the Twelve for a counselor. And it's been done before. That doesn't mean that the President of the Church would then be required to interview millions of men. But he could consider whoever he wants even if it's only five, ten, fifteen non-apostles that cross his mind.

I didn’t suggest anyone.  Wasn’t sure why others assumed I included myself.  Doesn’t matter though.

To be clear, I'm just poking fun at the people who complained about a lack of "diversity" in the quorum.

It's obviously more important whether or not new Apostles have strong testimonies and leadership skills, not what their skin color is.  And even if the most progressive firebrand was called to be an apostle, the system isn't set up for him to be able to make meaningful change until he is a senior apostle or the prophet, which isn't going to happen for decades.

I don't know much about either of the new Elders, but Elder Gong has an especially strong resume.  In spite of what I just said, he will no doubt be an important voice on international matters:

He also worked in oil, which I am surprised our progressive members aren't criticizing. He was my Stake President for part of the time I lived in Provo; awesome leader. It's sad that we have to see identity politics in the Church, concerning someone the Lord has called. It's not reconcilable with doctrine concerning how the Lord chooses His servants.

I heard rumours he has a gay son, is that actually true?

I have no clue, and that wouldn't matter to me. Not sure how It has anything to do with anything, unless you're just being facetious.

I was just wondering if that is true or not, no "agenda" here

No worries. Apparently he does. But I don't see the relevance. Don't mean that in a rude way, either.
