Does that say something about how you are supposed to give 10% of your estate as your last tithing check?

I don't know of anywhere where it says your are "supposed" to do that. But a member can certainly do that if they want to.
Chance are you have already paid tithing on the money that represents the value of your estate.

I didn't.  I wanted to come here where I trust sources a little better than I trust google or at least get a good idea of where it could be found.

I am really sorry that your in-laws did something different with their money than was promised to their children. That wasn't right and is a great example of why to not promise things to your children unless you know you can and will want to keep that promise. I do think though that this did not "cause" your husband to stop paying tithing, but rather it was his own choice - a choice that should be independent from what choice anyone else makes except for you in most cases. Either way though I'm sorry that it has been rough on both of you.

A few years ago the LDS Philanthropies made a video that my distant relative was in about not giving your inheritance to wayward or ex LDS children and giving it to the LDS church. They've since taken it down, in fact Mormon Dialogue had a discussion about it. This has nothing to do with the question you posted but does show that certain teachings or policies go away quick if it's not taken very well or a backlash about it. Here is the thread in case you're not aware.

Doctrinally, the OP idea is ludicrous:  we covenant to give all our resources to the Lord.  If we die with excess (over what we deem appropriate to give family and causes --- we do have agency to support whatever we feel prompted to support and there is much good in our world when people give charitably) and are trying to be doctrinal about things, we'd give everything that's left, not just 10%.

Just wondering if we are going to need money in the resurrection? Should we keep some in a bank account or locked up in a safe just in case for when we return?
I suppose by then we will be fully living the law of consecration.

It occurs to me that the specific parent may have wanted to make sure his/her heirs paid tithing on their inheritance and so they paid it first before the distributions.  That could explain it.

I have not read this link yet and I have never heard this before...but no one has the right..especially a church or any organization to tell anyone who to leave their money to.  This goes way on and above control..IMO.

Edited to add:..Now as common sense parents/grandparents...they would set up a trust or know if inheritance would hurt a child..especially if they are on drugs..but to have any use persuasion for these monies..is out of line.

Question 2: Do the people who inherit the money need to pay tithing on their inheritance?  Does it matter if the person who died stipulates tithing be paid before the inheritance?

Think of it as a farm, which is the "family's wealth". You don't sell the farm or give a tenth to the church when the parents die.

Tithing is on income, not inheritance imo, unless it is liquidated and spent

Imo reinvesting is not income. It's like a 1031 exchange with no taxes due

You are right - the topics are not the same thing, so after this post I would appreciate if we stay on topic.

I am aware of what you are talking about. I know about it through you. I'm not sure if you realize how much you have talked about it and what happened with your inlaws. Is there anything you can do about that situation now? Then please to it for yourself.  If not then I would try to let it go. It seems to weigh so heavy on you and I would love to see you free from the pain of it.
