Lots of Florida has lost power. Damage  is severe.

Carribean islands are in bad shape. Expected damage is expected to be in the hundreds of billions. 25 dead so far but that number is expected to rise.

I'm the only one in my family not being affected by hurricanes this year...

My bro is in Texas, and the rest of my family is in FL. Their personal residences could receive damage if tree limbs start flying, but I think they are all safe from flooding. I remember as a boy one hurricane blew water right up to our front door, and it started lapping in under the door... I wonder how that home will fair in this storm.  A lot of people built homes on the water, that just aren't capable of withstanding much storm surge, but I think Ft Myers and Key West are going to take the brunt of this storm.

This seems insensitive, but all those people in SW Houston need help. I believe those in the flood plain should only receive Fed Flood ins assistance if they agree to sell their house in exchange. Some of the houses in the area have received assistance up to sixteen times and been rebuilt. It is time to put an end to the cycle and only give the money to rebuild if they rebuild elsewhere. This article in Forbes makes this argument. A significant portion of the area used to  be swamp. It is time to let it return to nature and build a flood reservoir. There is a reason those living there cannot afford flood insurance.

I'm in south Tx.  My pet pieve right now - the yellow helping hands shirts.  I refuse to wear them - it is similar to businesses profiting off of the storm, the church wants to profit off of tragedy.  Prideful self-righteous members strutting around with their bright yellow billboard shirt on??  What happened to the "let not your right hand know what our left is doing", or the - no alms to be seen of men idea?  I have worked cleanup jobs with and without the church - the jobs without the church were humble, sincere, and helped people both emotionally and tangibly.  The work done with the church was agenda driven, not sincere, yes it helped people temporally, but not spiritually and is not a good advertising campaign.  The shirts destroy the entire thing.  I will not wear the shirt, and I am embarrassed to be around others who are wearing them  Just my 2 cents..

I had mixed feelings about it when my son and I helped after Katrina and Rita. I viewed the work as service, but at the early morning prayer meeting before we went to work for the day in Louisiana after Katrina, the local Area Seventy told us it wasn't a service project but an effort to improve the church's image in the area. My son, who was 16, refused to wear the shirt after he heard that. I wore it because it was a church-sponsored project, and it just seemed appropriate to do what I was asked. My son, however, ended up wrapping the shirt around his head as a sweatband when our stake president said that he needed to wear the shirt so the leaders could keep track of everyone. After Rita, they ran out of shirts, so it wasn't an issue.

I understand what you mean, though. There's a tension between doing your alms in private and letting your light shine as a believer.

This objection is silly. Being proud of an organization doing a good thing (not counting the obvious logistical benefit of matching t-shirts) is not the equivalent of an individual boasting or being showy about charitable donations. Did you know that the HEB trucks that brought relief supplies all had the company logo on the side? Shameful! And all the LDS are strutting? Can you put a video of all that strutting on YouTube for comedy purposes?

Also, how did other charitable organizations help 'spiritually' in a way that the church does not?

I volunteer for and go to events in support of a charity I feel strongly about (help for abused and neglected children). The events are primarily about raising public awareness of our existence, collecting funds to help with our mission, and hoping to reach people able and willing to volunteer. I haven't noticed a lot of strutting at those events but if actively advertising is a sin the entire organization and myself are certainly doomed to the fires of hell for our temerity in outperforming even the diabolic LDS church in trying to further our mission.

If you are so ashamed of the gospel that wearing a t-shirt identifying you as LDS is this off-putting you may want to look into that.

Irma has , for the most part, pushed Harvey off the front page/ websites .  Can I/we get an update on the state of the water levels etc and how the cleanup is going ( apart from the yellow shirt thing ) Youtube has stuff from a week ago but little new.

As I have said before, wearing a recognizable T shirt might keep you from being shot as a looter. I've seen the signs !!

The reservoir levels have dropped below what is thought of as the danger zone but it will still most likely take over a month to empty. Some areas of Houston are still underwater (primarily West Houston). Several water treatment plants have leaked and the water contains toxins and dangerous bacteria.

Woth Irma we were lucky. Due to the hurricane pushing inland early storm surges were limited along a lot to the coast.

I know on my mission whenever someone was baptized our response was to shout "Cha-Ching" and fantasize over the sweet filthy lucre we were going to be raking in. This is also why the church intentionally ignores areas like South America and Africa where average income is lower. Would not want to bring dead weight into the church. Instead we focus on areas like Japan, Europe, and the USA and encourage our missionaries to focus proselyting efforts on the wealthy.

Florida is currently asking evacuees not to return yet until the situation is assessed. It is expected to take weeks to restore power to everyone in the area. Some of the bridges in the Keys are expected to need repairs too before residents can get back.
