JAHS Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Not sure how reliable or accurate this news source is. Missionary Shot Down in Street A young missionary was killed in cold blood in the streets of Honduras. Jonathan Ernesto Ordonez was on his way home from church with a bag full of Bibles when an man on motorcycle pulled up and shot him five times. The shooter then tried to escape on the bike but the motorcycle stalled. The ordeal was caught on camera by witnesses at the scene. The Daily Mail reported that officers arrested a man named Wilmer Leonel Sierra in connection with the shooting. Police say Sierra was convicted in the past for drug trafficking, making threats to kill, and homicides. According to LaPrensa, Ernesto Ordonez was a student and missionary at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Robert F. Smith Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Maybe Scott Lloyd could check with the Mormon Newsroom on this.
JAHS Posted August 22, 2017 Author Posted August 22, 2017 (edited) Here's another source if you can speak Spanish http://www.laprensa.hn/sucesos/1098504-410/apresan-asesino-misionero-honduras-wilmer_sierra_maradiaga- I saw another source that included a video immediately after the shooting but perhaps too graphic to include here. Apparently this happened a week ago, but have only seen articles about it from the area he was in. He is about 27 years old so it is possible that he did serve a mission but is not a current full time missionary. Edited August 22, 2017 by JAHS
ALarson Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 (edited) I certainly hope it's not true, but from doing a search, I found numerous sources reporting it. Edited August 22, 2017 by ALarson

The story linked to in the OP links to a story at DailyMail.com dated August 14th http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4789348/Man-shot-dead-missionary-tries-start-motorcycle.html DailyMail.com seems to specialize in stories about celebrities and bikinis. If this was a real story the church would have made comment a couple of weeks ago and I'm sure the story would have been picked up by a local media outlet in Salt Lake City.

I think it is a real story but, even though they are calling him a missionary, after reading more articles it appears most likely that the young man had served a mission but was not currently serving a full-time mission.

Calm Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Maybe he was a ward mission leader these days or perhaps that was the last formal or best picture the family had of him and gave it to the reporter for the article or the reporter saw it at the funeral and then the reporter assumed it meant he was currently one and that got picked up by everyone else.
