Chinese National People's Congress

This is not meant to be at political (at all !), though I am sure the thread will eventually devolve into politics and be killed.  Anyway, I was watching a news piece on China's response to the situation in North Korea. The piece used stock footage of the Chinese National People's Congress. I never realized how similar the Congress building looks to the LDS Conference Center. Weird. Maybe this will help when we starting sending missionaries to the mainland.

Hey I've been in that building! (memories). And you are correct the similarities are high.

I believe there are already missionaries in China, there are yet to be proselyting (other than Hong Kong) missionaries, but yes, I know a few who has been called there, but not to proselytize.

One measure of how well a stadium is designed is the time to evacuate the entire stadium in an emergency.  A simulation showed that the Coliseum in Rome could have been evacuated faster than the modern Bird's Nest in China even with the latest engineering design techniques.  The designer was not very happy with the results.

Another similarity:  Years ago I roomed with a Chinese mainland grad student in Provo.  He was not LDS.  However, he felt right at home in Utah.  He looked at the First Presidency and Twelve as the rulers of Utah, and thought them to be analogous to the octogenarian Politburo in the People's Republic of China (PRC).

It's what to be expected from buildings with similar functions (large meetings). It's like finding similarities between Central American and Egyptian pyramids. It's the nature of pyramids or indoor amphitheaters...there's only so much you can do to the shape, particularly on large scales. To me there's some very obvious structural differences. The conference center has more architectural detail many of which would improve sound quality for concerts/sound. The ceilings are completely different. The Chinese one is more austere and if you look at other pictures you can see that the tiers are actually more squarish in shape where the conference center is more rounded. Here's another angle of both buildings. It becomes more apparent they're really not that similar beyond the functional structure mimicked since Greece

It's like most popular music being built on the I-IV-V chord progression. There are myriad nuances in the melodic and rhythmic details, but the same harmonic structure is there, more or less.
