Looking back..I wish that I had learned so much more of real history and doctrine...so that is where I am coming from. Children first..always. Amen, always teach truth and no one has to go back and do damage control. But when so much of our history comes from personal journals, there will always be conflicting accounts. As a Faith, we move forward in faith, when we have no reason to discount the history. When and if we do find error then we must address it, not with the glee that many do, but because it is the right thing to do. 1

Calm Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) https://www.lds.org/manual/primary-5-doctrine-and-covenants-and-church-history/helps-for-the-teacher?lang=eng It's on the four year cycle for ages 8-11, so some kids get it when 8, others 9, 10,or 11. Edited August 5, 2017 by Calm
The Nehor Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 My published copy of Josephus still has that obviously altered or added line about Jesus in there as if it were actually part of the original text. While you are doing small-scale corrections can you take care of this one too? TIA
Rain Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) Assuming I felt the same about it after praying I would correct those things in an email like suggested if I were primary president. I would probably start by saying that over time we discover more histirical resources and as we do so the church is slowly correcting what has been taught incorrectly, but it takes time. Let them know you may share some of those corrections from time to time so they can share truth with the rising generation, which may help them as they come across this info later. You are definitely right to be concerned about teachers. One of our primary teachers has been a member for about 6 years now. She is one of the sweetest people I know. She would feel so uncomfortable if she later found out she taught the wrong thing to the children. She would blame it on herself, despite not knowing the resources she was given were incorrect. And some children may not catch the distinction, but other it will stick like crazy glue and it will become stumbling stone for them. I don't think children are more intelligent than years past, but they have so much more information and resources available to them that the often know more than we did when I was a child. It means it is more important now than ever to teach then correctly. Be prepared for kick back. I've recently read about a study that showed how hard it is to convince people that the new information is correct and have them change even if they do know it. I don't know if the Jacob Haun info you shared would have that kind of effect, but the handcart company stuff may be really tough because those stories were shared a lot. --------- I think some here may also be feeling defensive thinking that bsjkki is being critical and trying to bring that into the primary classes. I sense she has a genuine concern here and for the most part it is an easy fix under the authority of her calling. I've thought about sharing the info you have shared with our primary president just in case she wants to do something as well. Edited August 5, 2017 by Rain 1
Tacenda Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) Is this for this Sunday? I shared the info on my ward/neighborhood FB page. Edited: changed mind, didn't share, they probably don't care anyway. Edited August 5, 2017 by Tacenda
Calm Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Do you want to be part of the change or not, Tacenda? If you could be the reason one youth or adult didn't have the shock of discovering something on their own, but with a friendly face, why not? 2
bsjkki Posted August 6, 2017 Author Posted August 6, 2017 I got a response back from the lds.org feedback system."Thank you for your feedback concerning lesson 31 of the Valiant 5 manual. Your suggestion is very important and will be reviewed and considered. No timeline can be given as to when a change will be made as the online manual is digital copy of the hardcopy of the manual. Using the most accurate information available is always the best course. Sincerely, Response Team Volunteer - em I think the church is working on replacing these lessons and it is in the works but takes time. I think sending teachers more information would not be inappropriate. 2
