BTW, I had them answer a questionaire not too long ago on what is their favorite this or that, or favorite thing to do in spare time, etc. I didn't get too much out of them. I spoke to my son today, who is married and lives out of state, his answer was just money is good, no gift cards. I hate that because I worry it just goes to bills. But if that's what they need. My dad couldn't afford much but he would give out cash, and once he made it special when he gave out $2.00 dollar bills to all the grandkids and their parents. You don't see those around anymore. How about $3.00 bills.

My dad would set up the platform Thanksgiving weekend and begin the process that would reach it's climax Christmas morning. The trains would remain up until Valentines day. I know it was a lot of work. And I had run of the trains, matchbox car/trucks, and people. Friends would come over to see the layout and it was very user friendly with plenty of switches, sidings, roads, mountains, bridges, lighted buildings/street lights, people/animals, and trees. It was the one thing I looked forward to. Most people today don't seem to have either the time or the patience to get involved in such things, but it was way better than any computer game I can think of. Even a set around the tree with a few buildings would allow for some make believe fun. I learned how to wire lights and built many a model house. I think kids don't do this today because their parents simply cannot be bothered and the kids learn to be likewise.--- sad... 2
Calm Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 We stopped doing trains around the tree due to our dog. Have lego trains now that my brother wanted my dad's set back (parents gave it to me to care for while others were traveling...I was hoping he would forget about it, lol, but my son prefers the smaller gauge rather than the old massive steel cars) and my son moved out taking his with him. If my daughter's meds ever kick in so I can move her comfort nest (bean bag plus pillows and blankets), I can get them up around the year as I have set aside half my office for legos (the dog is not allowed upstairs into bedroom areas...no way am I allowing dog bums on my beds).

(My brother is a cop and has one that says "Come back with a warrant") My mom got my husband a DNA kit! He's adopted and has no idea of his heritage. I'm so excited! 4

I have big totes full of my children's school work, awards, etc. Each of them have big totes, I save a lot. Now I'm thinking they probably wouldn't like to take it with them wherever they go, so I really want to take photos of each item and upload a program that will turn them into individual books, either for their birthdays or Christmas. Now I just need to do it. 1

My dad loved elec trains and had one of those large storage sheds devoted solely to his trains, which were permanently set up on a big platform/board... it was absolutely wonderful and fascinating. He had about six trains of varying sizes that could all go at once... he had bridges, buildings, depots, houses, cars/trucks, trees, animals, etc etc. He would put on his railroad hat and sit at the controls. When his grandsons came along, they sat with him from the time they were toddlers and grew up loving to play with the trains. When the family gathered for the holidays, the first thing the fellows would do was head to the train "barn" with Grandad to see all the new additions, etc. We always had a train around the Christmas tree... Many people still are interested in trains. Others never would have been even if born earlier. I loved coloring as a child, but my children never did even though I have given them ample opportunity. Really didn't like sports and neither did my husband, but my son is often outside shootng hoops so my husband is often out there playing with him. I simply look around that until this year, it seemed that fewer and fewer homes decorated with lights for Christmas. The new poke in the ground projection novelty seems to have produced renewed interest. But the reality is that it takes some money but mostly time, patience, motivation, and oh yes --- the Christmas Spirit. My parents would decorate the Christmas Tree, fill stocking, and assemble toys all in one evening (Christmas Eve). My dad decorated the outside (in the weeks before Christmas), and my Mom did a super job of decorating the inside, washing, ironing, baking, cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, making beds, mopping, oh and cooking dinner..... Many people today are on their computer ----- even me... They want to be amused but don't want to put out much effort (thought some have 4 dogs and some cats). That's another thing... We had a dog and then a cat and then a dog and then a cat. We did have a parakeet for a time with a cat. But my neighbors didn't seem to be running kennels.. They all had A family "pet" --- and they never took it to the strore back then! I remember one family having a St. Bernard who loved all the neighborhood kids, but even that most people thought the animal an elephant and too large for a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom rancher ---- though they had a basement. I'm not saying people shouldn't do this or that, However, it just seems that priorities are all screwed up. People don't go to church because they feel it is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, and they don't want to get dressed up. So they replaced the fans with air conditioning and install better windows and efficient heaters, and congregants shows up in casual clothes. The churches all seemed pretty full at one time, and the men and boys wore suits & ties, and the ladies, and girls wore dresses, hats, gloves, pocketbooks, Oddly, now people go shopping on Sunday --- but they can't get up for an hour at church... Our church does rather well with two services --- so I shouldn't complain. But it takes one or two to get others motivated. However, they cannot be texting on their cell phones, watching TV, playing computer games, and sleeping. There needs to be more personal interaction. And even with TV (my parents hated it) and records (my tolerated them)., I was shoved out the door to play, and I built, and painted models with friends and built forts in the woods, tried fishing, built dams, ride bikes without the dumb helmets, climbed on barbed wire fences, chased cows, climbed trees, flew kites we built, explored the "haunted" house, Who does this today? The kids go to school and go home and that is about it. Oh, they have controlled sports, and band practice --- so it isn't all dull -- but things are very different now, and not as spontaneous and lively!
