But at the end of the day, we need to recognize that having detractors is pretty much part of the package one signs up for when entering the rough-and-tumble of politics, and that making enemies does not necessarily mean one has not been successful or has not done good work. I think we would hamstring ourselves as a people if all good Church members refused to run for political office because they were too squeamish about drawing fire and criticism Of course not, though who your boss and coworkers are can definitely limit your productivity, like any other job. As I mentioned in the closed thread a little glibly about sorry for the few of the sane ones in the room (i.e. Romney). On this particular chance and using your phraseology, taking this job means in essence accepting that you may very well be having your hamstring pulled hard. "As for guaranteeing a better political climate for Mormons, I'm tempted settle at this point in time for curbing the worsening of the political climate. But hope springs eternal, and I do hope things get better." Cant get this in a quote box cuz I'm on my phone. If you've read the other thread, it may be an indication that hope for me currently is a little...well hamstrung. Currently when I look at the news and what he has power to actually implement and what he wants, i'm mostly still cringing and holding my breath. I don't know what it means for us Mormons, but I do hope that there may be a little change in what we focus on and that messages from our leaders about caring for refugees, religious liberty, and softer immigration may continue to push us to better things. At least as a people. With luv, BD
JLHPROF Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 (edited) 3 hours ago, Scott Lloyd said: JLHPROF is wrong to the extent that he advocates insularity and circle-the-wagons mentality. Today's prophets and apostles are right in that they urge us to make our influence for good felt in the political and governmental sphere. We have to try to preserve the optimal climate for performing the work we have been called to do, which is to prepare the world for the Second Coming by inviting all to come unto Christ and be perfected in Him (and that includes the dead as well as the living, by the way). Where did I advocate insularity? I advocated scripture. I advocated an accurate recognition of the Last Days. At no point did I suggest we cease missionary work. I simply recognize that by acknowledging we live in the last days we must recognize scripture, prophecy, and the teachings of the prophets that any propping up of the government we do can only be a temporary fix. It's coming down, and our current situation is as good a time as any. Edited November 21, 2016 by JLHPROF

With luv, BD The fact that Trump, at this point, is even talking to the likes of Romney, much less doing it "cordially," and is making no secret of the fact that Romney is being seriously considered for the secretary of state post, arguably the most important cabinet position in the administration, well, I never would have predicted it two weeks ago, and it seems to me it ought to offer a measure of hope for some that Trump is not as hard-line as he has made himself and others have made him out to be. But perhaps I'm just being naive. Time will tell, I suppose. I lost a lot of hope back in the '90s when Bill Clinton emerged from the Lewinsky scandal pretty much unscathed. I felt a pall later when marriage was redefined. But the world continued to turn. Members of the Church continued to make their influence felt insofar as they could. As they continue to do. I don't believe the end is near. Not just yet. Edited November 22, 2016 by Scott Lloyd 1

There has to be the influence of good men and women in all spheres, including governmental and political, so the prophecy can be fulfilled about the church of the Lamb being over all the face of the earth in terms of influence and presence, though not numerical dominance. That is scriptural as well. That hasn't been perfectly fulfilled, yet, although it has been steadily getting there since the gospel was restored to the earth. 2
strappinglad Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 The " End of the World " topic is fun but fluctuating. I'm quite sure that the early Saints were persuaded that the end was nigh even at the doors. With the civil war and 600,000 Americans dying and many more severely damaged , representing a substantial portion of the US population at the time, many would have seen that event as a major sign of the times. Here we are 150 years later and still puttering along. BRM in his Mormon Doctrine laid out about 50 ' signs ' that had to be fulfilled before Christ could return as per prophecy. A quick look shows that while many have been accomplished, many still remain and of those , some are sufficiently vague that their fulfillment may be a long ways off. Then again, as I have said before, I never imagined the Berlin wall to be removed in my lifetime and it has been over 20 years since that happened. I have noticed that there is about 200 years from the establishment of a new dispensation and the unraveling . 2030 anyone ??? 2

It would have been hard for Church members not to have viewed the Civil War as deserved punishment being poured out on a wicked society that had murdered the prophets and persecuted the saints, preliminary to the end times ushering in the Millennium. The Council of Fifty in Nauvoo was established in part to have the framework in place for a political goverment during Christ's millennial reign. Joseph Smith's prophecy on war foretold not just the Civil War but unceasing conflict between the nations of the earth. Which is transpiring, of course, but at a slower pace than some of the early saints might have imagined. Our role, of course, is to be a light to the world for as long as we need to be, and to remain unspotted from the world for as long as it takes. Which is why it is more important than ever to follow direction from prophets and apostles, to eschew worldly trends that conflict with what we know to be divine truth and law and generally to stand in holy places. 1

Hey you weren't specific about the ocean, just the ice. No need to take it too seriously...I just saw this vid a few moments after reading your comment and couldn't help myself. Besides, the titanic itself doesn't need to worry about icebergs no matter what happens to our oceans. It's pretty safe from that now at the bottom of the Atlantic. Scott Lloyd Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 So it's being reported that the Trump administration will not be pursuing criminal investigations of Hillary Clinton and her email servers. This feeds a hunch that a lot of the Trump rhetoric during the campaign was mere theatrics, that Trump is not the bogeyman that many fear. In view of that, it is reasonable to suppose not only that Romney could be compatible as secretary of state in the administration but that that way would be clear for him to accomplish some good. 1

I have read reports of that decision causing backlash by many of his electorate that propelled his victory. This doesn't make him less of a "bogeyman", it simply makes him less trustworthy and more unpredictable. To me it says, this is a man who has no problem creating expectations in order to get his way, but once he gets his way, all promises are out the window. That to me makes him more of a bogeyman. It says, this is a man who is willing to throw a tantrum and make a big scene if he doesn't get his way. The only way to shut him up is to give him his da** cookies. I personally don't feel safe with that kind of child-temperament in the white house. 2

When I was watching the network news coverage on election night, I heard one of the commentators characterize this as an "election of rejection." That's what it was for many of us. All we can do now is hope for the best in moving forward. I think we'd be doing that regardless of the outcome. The prospect of Romney being secretary of state has bolstered my hopes. Popular Post Darren10 Posted November 23, 2016 Popular Post Posted November 23, 2016 (edited) For the 2012 campaign I think Mitt Romney served mormonism quite well by showing the world that Mormons aren't a crazy whacked out kooky group of religious zealots. Overall, Romney was so dignified during that campaign year. I think Mitt Romney, with his aura of dignity, intelligence, and in his having a firm grasp on the main events happening around the world, will make a very fine Secretary of State. Furthermore, I think Mitt Romney will continue to seve mormonism well. He will do so by continue to show the world what a down to earth kind human being he really is.
