I think most members go overboard in the way they elevate the importance of obedience to the WoW, especially when you consider the actual scriptural account specifically says it's not a commandment. I know that's not his intended meaning... just my perspective.

Apparently some gospel hobbies and fanaticism that lead to looking beyond the mark are more acceptable than others. Perhaps we need to revisit where the mark actually lies.

Under inspiration from God, however, later prophets have chosen to make some portions of it a behavioral benchmark for faithfulness and worthiness to do certain things such as receiving baptism and other ordinances, worshiping in the temple and serving in certain Church callings. There is a passage in the immediately preceding section of the Doctrine and Covenants (Section 88), that I believe appropriately belongs with the Word of Wisdom in Section 89: Quote 124 Cease to be aidle; cease to be bunclean; cease to cfind fault one with another; cease to dsleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be einvigorated.
