You seem to be protected by the moderators here and tend to run away from threads at times, but those with "less-favored" status don't try to rub it in to you. I won't argue with you about it further. Take it up with the moderation team if you must.

When I returned, that thread had been closed, a mod had falsely reprimanded me in the closed thread and I had been shipped off to MD&D pergetory. Hard to provide a CFR to a closed thread. As a mod who did respond on another board, the vast majority of my time was occupied by disputes of callings and it was spread onto the board itself so we actually set aside a forum for it in hopes it would stay out of discussions, but it only made it worse. I qm not saying that all calls are infallible on the board, but I have seen tons more success at keeping discussions focused on the topics and off of personal disagreements over time on this board. And it has lasted tons longer than ZLMB did. 1

Calm Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) With most who complain, you respond once and it becomes an endless bombard. Again not saying everyone, but if mods have limited time and do not have hours to go through emails determining which have value and which don't, a generic nonresponse policy is wise even if a small portion of posters are frustrated by it. The choice very well might mean the survival of the board and the ability to have meaningful discussions even for those on limited. We have several posters who were on limited for years, undoubtedly frustrated, but they managed as far as I can tell quite well to have constructive conversations. A number of the better posters don't do 12 posts in a month, let alone a day. It can be a hardship not being able to start a thread but many other posters will likely be willing to do so for one if it is a decent, not too repetitive or personal topic. Jeanne Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Calm, I don't envy your position. You guys do a great job overall with the different faith levels and strong personalities on this board. I have seen your job and I don't want it.
Calm Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Not a mod on this board, was on ZLMB (whose spectacular failure in achieving a working balance I have always suspected is one of the main reasons they have such policies on this board). I swore I would never be one again and I was right. I was for a short time on the Fairmormon Support board. Again, even a moderate moderating system didn't work because it was too high in cost of time and effort.
Five Solas Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I would say Russel M. Nelson's "Divine Love" wherein he expressly stated God's love is "conditional" came as a shock to me and stands out as a landmark. It may have been obvious to everyone else in my ward at the time (and here on this forum), but somehow when I heard it said the way he said it--an alarm bell went off in my head and it stayed with me. Up until then I had a vague suspicion that what I had been taught and was being taught was wrong. God used Nelson to add gasoline to the spark. Within ~ 2.5 years of Nelson's words I found myself embracing traditional, Biblical Christianity and resigning my LDS membership--proof (to me at least) God's love really is unconditional & Grace means unmerited favor. And I would say knowing that--changes everything! No, I wasn't a great Mormon to begin with. For those of you committed, you didn't lose much. I've shared that on our forum before... :0) --Erik 2

Calm Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 No problem, some people got confused at the very beginning because there was speculation here and elsewhere I was a mod...don't know why since I was very clear every time I saw it and other times I was not, I guess some thought I would lie about it for some reason. Anyway, I used to get a lot of mod requests, rarely nowadays but I still act quickly to try to ensure no misunderstandings.
Calm Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 There is supposed to be a "that" between "times" and "I". I will shortly inherit my husband's ipad (I don't need fancy tech so happy with handmedowns) and will hopefully be able to edit again all the time.

JAHS Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 This one by Elder Dallin H Oaks helped me to understand better that it's not what we do that gets us into heaven, but what we become because of what we do. "From such teachings we conclude that the Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts—what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts—what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become." (Dallin H. Oaks, “The Challenge to Become,” New Era, Aug. 2002, 12) It helped me to think more about why I do what I do and how it can make me a better person. 1
Rain Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Hard to figure out something because mostly I feel things just build up line upon line rather than my "mind was changed". Some of it is probably my problem with memory. The closest I can think of, but isn't really what you are asking, is about the atonement. I understood that Christ's suffering for our sins was all in Gethsemane and I couldn't understand how the cross fit in very well because of that. Then on another board someone asked me a question which got me to wondering if He suffered for sins on the cross as well. I spent a long time searching for the answer and finally asked my bishop. He didn't know so during a reccomend interview with the stake president who used to be a seminary teacher and was then in CES somewhere, I asked the question again. He wasn't sure how to answer me so he told me he would get back to me. It took a few months and he finally gave me some papers. The first was an email to him saying it was a good question. The rest were quotes from GAs and scriptures that showed He did suffer for our sins on the cross as well as Gethsemene. It all made sense to me and I had been searching for a couple of years by then so I guess you could say I changed my mind then. I've since find other sources/scriptures that show that and I wondered for awhile how I could miss that when I had read it several times. 1

Can anyone share an experience where they've changed their minds on a "point of fact" based on the words of a General Authority? For example, "I used to believe such-and-such, but then I heard this talk and now I believe differently..." Here are a few: I have substantially altered my view of immigration issues by listening to the Brethren. I have also substantially altered several aspects of my views on same-sex marriage by listening to the Brethren. I have held in abeyance some of my views about the Scouting program out of deference to the Brethren. This article by Elder Oaks has had a profound effect on my approach to coping with disagreements in a Church setting. This talk by Elder Holland had a profound effect on my wife in terms of helping her decide she was ready to become a mother. The "Gospel Topics" essays, prepared under the direction and approval of the First Presidency and the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, have been quite influential in my views on the Priesthood Ban, the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and polygamy. There are a few more examples, but they are a bit personal and too sacred for me to feel comfortable disclosing here. Thanks, -Smac Edited August 15, 2016 by smac97 3
