My parents and other family members talk about church a lot, which is of course fine with me. I just leave it alone and listen, as I should have on that occasion. That is what I've always done. It's the alone time that is the danger zone!

Just took a decade or so to figure out that first, I had to define boundaries and second that I had to maintain them. I really do not like doing so, and have been times I thought about pretending to all of the sudden believe and go back to Mormonism. Just so I can have a closer relationship with my Mormon family. But no, that isn't going to happen.

Popular Post flameburns623 Posted May 29, 2016 Popular Post Posted May 29, 2016 (edited) I've stayed out of the "who is anti-Mormon?"/"is 'anti-Mormon' a pejorative?" discussion because I think it's a both/and conundrum. Basically, anyone opposed to the LDS hierarchy and/or it's teachings, anyone seeking to fundamentally change Mormon orthopraxy as it is today; who seeks to initiate a faith/identity crisis in members, leaders, or the institution generally; and/or anyone seeking to reduce the membership, influence, and/or prestige of the LDS Church in order to effect fundamental changes in or failure of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, could be deemed "anti-Mormon". The term could be applied broadly enough to apply to virtually any and all critics. No matter how scholarly, genteel, humble, or well-meaning that critic might be. WHY some such critics might be styled "anti-Mormon", while others might be seen to be reformers, activists, or (constructive) critics probably speaks as much to the one employing the appellation as to the one labeled. It may be a cool-headed and relatively objective way to categorize a particular set of critics. It might be an attempt to marginalize and inoculate against certain critics. It might even be a pejorative, an insult, or a defamatory jab. I am inclined to feel that context and experience are the only way to sift out what is going on in a particular time and place when the "anti-Mormon" phrase is displayed in a conversation. My thoughts. Edited May 29, 2016 by flameburns623 5

It's like watching a beloved movie. You know how it's going to end, but it can be fun to see it play out. I will read something someone has posted to me, and I will think to myself, "Hmm, Scott, how are you going to answer this one?" Then, maybe several posts later, I'll read the response post I made and think to myself, "Not bad, Scott. If it were someone else, I would award a rep point." I've done this kind of thing before, too, although not usually here. I was once digging through my hard drive looking for something I wrote years before, stumbled upon another item and was amazed that I could write such deathless prose. No, I'm serious! It was actually pretty good writing, and it surprised me that it came from me. Thus came the conceit that maybe I could actually write a book. Of course, just because one is impressed by one's own writing does not mean that it is any good! That is definitely something to keep foremost in one's mind. Edited June 4, 2016 by Stargazer 1
