Tyler Glenn has released a new solo song "Trash" in which he laments the hurt and pain of being rejected by the church he once loved and served.  For those unfamiliar with Glenn he came out Gay 2 years ago.  I believe that the new anti gay policy was the straw the broke his proverbial shelf.  When he came out in  Rolling Stone Magazine he was still very pro Mormon and talked about his desire to be an ambassador for the gay Mormon community.  When the church announced last year that gay couples legally married would be considered apostate,  Glenn's belief dissolved.  anyway thought this might interest some here.  I've been a Neon Tree's fan since their days in Provo...I just find it interesting how things have evolved since then...the church lost a good man in Tyler Glenn...I'm saddened to see it end like this

I listened to his interview on MS's.  He mentioned his faith deteriorated after reading things on the internet.  Very interesting podcast, and really sets the record straight.  I hope some can watch that and see where he's coming from first before viewing the video.

The idea of the song is good but the song isn't very good, in my estimation.  But I ain't some musician so what do I know.  Music videos are mostly lame and this one isn't much different. 

Anywho, I haven't listened to his mormonstories interview as yet.  I might.  His is an interesting sounding story.

it was a heartbreaking interview for me...but then I tend to sympathize with those who have been hurt by the church...

That's too bad. I can imagine that the change in policy was hardest on those who sincerely believed the church would soon accept ssm as an ok option.

I don't believe the Church will ever do that. However I do think that labeling SSM partners as Apostates is unkind.

I listened to most of the mormon stories interview. It's too long (like most of Dehlin's recent stuff) but it's an important story to hear. 

The video strikes me as just sad. Yes, not exactly my taste (though I like some of the Neon Trees' stuff). But this is just a rant by someone who is very hurt at the moment. I hurt for him and many others. My kids, in particular, have really looked up to the Neon Trees (and Imagine Dragons) as role models and as examples of how mormons can be cool (something that is sometimes a challenge when you're one of 3 members in the whole school).

FYI, the video contains images that may be disturbing to many LDS - torn up scriptures and altered church imagery. Also, at one point in the video I'm pretty sure he's imitating stuff from the temple.

EDIT to add: The OP describes Glenn as a former mormon. In his MS interview, Glenn said he longer views himself as a member, but he hasn't formally resigned either.

Neither the Church nor its policies are "anti gay."

And FWIW, "Trees" is plural, "Tree's" is possessive, and "Trees'" is plural possessive.

Betrayed?  How?  The Church has never flip-flopped or been inconsistent on this issue.  If anything, efforts have been increased to reach out.

Read the article of where he was and where he is now.  You can't be so unfeeling as to not at least have empathy and compassion for him and his situation.

And, where did I say the church has flip flopped?  I didn't and I don't believe that  it has.  But that doesn't mean he can't feel betrayed and angry and that we shouldn't try to understand how he feels.

The Church will weather this and move ahead, and I am glad of that.  As for Mr. Glenn (having plainly removed himself from fellowship and turned against the Saints, I'll acknowledge his choice and refer to him as "Mr." rather than "Brother"), I am saddened and fear for him.

One of the lyrics is, "you used to baptize me when I wasn't ready."  That lyric denotes literally baptizing somebody that wasn't ready at the age of 8 to make a life-long commitment to being a gay man in the LDS Church, but it also implies being repeatedly hurt by somebody he was trusting--being put in a vulnerable position, trusting, and then dunk in the water while he wasn't holding his breath.

I agree he goes over the top.  I get he's angry but in his anger he's attempting to offend his former church going friends and family.  It'd be better if he just expressed his anger and hurt not trying to throw it in other's faces, I'd say.  But it's his life, I guess.  I do feel badly he feels like the Church views him as trash.  If so, that explains his anger.

Some may appreciate seeing a different side of Tyler Glenn. We humans sure have a big range of emotion and expression. I'm hopeful Tyler will eventually find peace.

In the Mormon Stories interview, he mentions how much he loves LDS hymns.  I know the church was a huge part of his life.  I'm sad the church chose to excise the gays from their midst.

I agree.  He's angry and hurt and so he wants to make others angry and hurt. Misery really does love company and we all give in to that impulse sometimes. 

But it doesn't ever make anything better.

I feel for his family and his band in a way.  I wasn't too enthused to see Tyler bringing the church into it, would have preferred that he didn't do that.  But I guess that's me, I play nice, nice.  I hate to see this happen especially as I see him in his off screen persona as being a great guy. But I guess he was hurt and is hurting back.  But wished he'd taken the higher road, or maybe he's speaking for the rest of the gays out there, and sacrificing himself for them, because I'm sure he's going to suffer a great deal of backlash.  So in this respect I guess I can respect that.
