cdowis Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 This can be very helpful for many members of the church to encourage their reading of the Book of Mormon.

By the way, discussions of the Book of Mormon are just one of a number of series of scriptural discussions that have been prepared and broadcast by KBYU over the years. 1

All of those are great, but if you don't have access to KBYU, there are a number of white-noise apps available that work as well. 4
flameburns623 Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Posting a question like this can be weird, since I can't be sure that someone won't cruise thru with a post such as "I like the broadcast a lot . . . but since I am featured on some of the episodes, I might be biased". It's easy for a consumer of any end product to forget the original source. Like the animal rights activist who scolded hunters for killing animals for meat instead of buying meat in the stores. 1

They've done the D&C and thr BoM. And some stuff on LDS history. And some biker guy does American history too.

I swore off cable/satellite TV many years ago because I didn't like paying the monthly bill, and much of the content I don't want polluting my home. Edited to add: Here's a link to the BYUtv home page, including the program with the "biker guy" ("American Ride"). Edited March 7, 2016 by Scott Lloyd 1

I'm not following you here. The scripture discussions programs I've seen on BYU television programming, are exclusively three or four members of the religion faculty at BYU sitting at a table giving their ruminations on selected scriptural passages.

If you've been to Utah and/or visited or attended BYU, then "BYU faculty" are people you may have some real familiarity with. As a viewer who has never seen Utah, it is as easy to forget that the shadows dancing on my wall are humans as it is for a schoolkid to be shocked at getting milk from a cow rather than from a bottle. And in case the other allusion went past you: a social networking post went viral last autumn scolding hunters for killing animals for their flesh instead of just buying meat from the store. Implying the poster did not understand that meat in a grocer's is also the flesh of slain animals. It was an attempt at humor. Hope this clarifies the joke.

I'm not clear on how it applies here, though. Edited March 7, 2016 by Scott Lloyd

I was humorously referencing the dissonance one experiences when one encounters a thing (or a person) outside a usual and customary context. The same sort of dissonance once experienced by people who might have met "Jed Clampett" in real life and realised that Buddy Ebsen wasn't an Appalachian hillbilly in real life. On the one hand most folks intellectually knew that: on the other hand: it likely felt odd. I was assigned to do property security while a movies was filmed. Dull stuff actually. Then I saw clips from the film after it was released: totally different experience. A couple of cars driving around a parking lot, slowly, had transformed into a high speed car chase. Have I overexplained the joke sufficiently yet? 1
mnn727 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I've tried watching it a few times -- just not terribly interesting to me to watch 4 "experts" give their opinions about scripture. I'd rather read it myself. 1

readstoomuch Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 The "Roundtable" has interesting points and moves a bit slowly. It doesn`t talk about controversy or much beyond theology. If they were a little shorter and I could watch them in order that I was reading, it would be of more help to me.
Coreyb Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 My opinion is that they are boring. To each their own I suppose 2

flameburns623 Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 Something told me when I was making the original comment to either avoid the humorous aside, or at least use emoticons. Ah well.
flameburns623 Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 OK, so humor aside (you needn't thank me so profusely, but you're all so very welcome ): I have watched perhaps a half-dozen or so of these broadcasts and I do agree with readstoomuch: it would be nice if they were more chronological. They aren't as vividly declaimed upon as some expository Bible Belt evangelists do with the OT and NT. The roundtable format wouldn't lend itself to that. Which format is actually a bit refreshing: a calmer, more thoughtful approach can be nice. Thanks to all who have lent their thoughts, and particularly those who endured my poor attempt at being funny!
Five Solas Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 I do hope someone will take the time/trouble to post a link when they get round to debating limited geography theories of the BoM. ;0) --Erik PS. I have a forever association with KBYU and my grandpa, near the end of his life. He'd enjoy watching the "Bonanza" re-runs they'd show in the afternoons.

Doctrine 612 Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I down loaded them to a thumb drive and listen to them on my way to work and home. Learned a lot.
