Where did Warren Jeffs influence for his polygamy come from?

Warren Jeffs practices polygamy, so did he get that influence from past church practices and D&C 132? And he married teenage brides, so did he get the influence to do that from Joseph Smith and Brigham Young who did the same? If the church never practiced polygamy, would there be no FLDS and no victims of Warren Jeffs polygamy in today's world? The FLDS claim polygamy is still doctrinal and practice it. Where did they get their influence to practice it?

Just like the Nephites who abused it, so Jeffs' group abuses it. They don't follow D&C132 apparently judging by all the reports of girls being forced to marry against their will - they are chosen by Jeffs instead as to who they will marry. D&C 132 indicates it should be a free will arrangement by all parties to be without sin.

They turned it into something disgusting on the principle that they are building their "kingdom." I believe they will pay dearly in the hereafter.

Fundamentalist Mormons trace their history (and most trace their authority claims) back to the Church  around the turn of the century.

As for Warren Jeffs - he is merely an example of how corruption occurs over time once the influence and authority of God is removed.
It happens in history.  Read up on the great apostasy and the corruption of Christianity during the  Middle Ages.  Or the changes in Judaism after Israel entered the Holy Land down to the days of Christ.

Blaming the LDS Church polygamous origins for the corruption of polygamy by Warren Jeffs is like blaming Christ and Peter for the Spanish Inquisition.

Thanks. I just saw the movie Prophet's Prey on Showtime so I was wondering where their origins on polygamy came from. I see they definitely corrupted the teaching.

Nothing like a tv movie to get all the facts wrong.

The origin of a practice can be revealed and pure, yet the practice still become corrupted and evil.

You could point to a number of practices and events in Christendom in the manipulations of tithes, righteous war, baptism, etc.

Did you see it? Is it wrong?

No idea, but I've seen many of these - In God's Country, Outlaw Prophet, Escape From Polygamy, Lifting the Veil.

Half the time they can't even get Joseph Smith's name right let alone any facts.  And since Krakauer was involved with this one I don't hold out high hopes.  Not exactly rushing to see it.  His book was bad enough.

If you want to see what modern polygamy really looks like Polygamy USA, Sister Wives, Big Love, etc all come much closer to the polygamists I've been acquainted with over the years.

/\ In the words of my pseudo-uncle from Creston, whose dad and half-brother were and are polygamists, "they're kinda weird, and it isn't right as far as the priesthood keys go, but they aren't bad dudes."

And “past church practices and D&C 132" got "that influence” from the Bible.  Had Biblical prophets and patriarchs not practiced polygamy, would Joseph Smith and Brigham Young have done so?

Of course, why stop there?  Had God acted sooner to enable Sarah to have Isaac …

From his own sick mind. His father didn't practice or teach what he does and most certainly Leroy Johnson did not.

The AUB and Centennial Park (in particular) seem to still be fairing very well, and I assume you believe they have lost authority.

Not all groups are the Warren Jeff's FLDS or the Kingstons. But I am not telling you something you don't already know.

Polygamy is in the Bible.

Not lived in the manner that Joseph Smith lived it.  And, polyandry was not in the Bible either.  But there are entire threads dedicated to this subject on here.

CFR for what?  That polyandry is not in the Bible or that Joseph lived polygamy different (which included polyandry, so that's what made it different right there) than it was lived in the Bible?  Either is pretty obvious, but let me know what you're referring to.  Thanks!!

Edited to add:  I'm going to be gone for the day, but will check back on here later.  I just wanted to let you know, thesometimesaint, that I'm not ignoring any of your responses :)

Polygamy... more than one living wife.

Polyandry... marrying another man''s wife.

Both are throughout the Bible.

Spiritual sealings as well as:

Levirate marriage

The custom of a widow marrying her deceased husband’s brother or sometimes a near heir. The word has nothing to do with the name Levi or the biblical Levites but is so called because of the Latin levir, meaning “husband’s brother,” connected with the English suffix -ate, thus constituting levirate. This system of marriage is designated inDeut. 25:5–10 (see also Gen. 38:8), is spoken of in Matt. 22:23–33; it also forms a major aspect of the story of Ruth (Ruth 4:1–12).

I said in the same manner it was lived in the Bible.

Which woman in the Bible was married to two husbands?  I don't recall any, but I'm always willing to learn and concede when I'm wrong.

(And, I'm really off of here for the day now :) )

You are not supposed to bring that up!  It puts a wrench in the silly argument that polygamy is not of God, not practiced by God's people, etc.  And it makes that whole argument of trying to paint the Church in a bad light more difficult.  Shame on you.

David married Saul's wives.
