Duncan Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I get that covenants are what God and us promise to each other and receive the blessings from faithful service but how does an oath factor into this? isn't an oath the same thing as a covenant? I see an oath as a verbal pledge that yes I will do something and isn't that the same thing as a covenant?
VideoGameJunkie Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I believe they're the same just like eternal life is the same thing as exaltation.
Avatar4321 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 and oath is a one sided promise. A covenant includes two or more parties 1

The Nehor Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 25 minutes ago, Duncan said: how would that work in a gospel sense? A covenant is you promise God something and he promises something in return. Oaths were big in e Law of Moses but we are generally not supposed to make oaths anymore. Mormon showed why when he made an oath and then ended up breaking it. God can also make oaths to people which he can be sure he does not have to break.
VideoGameJunkie Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Covenants seem to be more valuable and eternal and essential to our salvation.

I was once told: A promise (oath) is what you give to God A covenant is what you and God agree to give to each other An inheritance is what God gives to you Edited January 14, 2016 by JLHPROF 1
halconero Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I actually have to disagree with you on that, JLHPROF. Especially with regards to the oaths involved in our exaltation, they seem to be something uniquely done by God, rather than performed by humanity.
Avatar4321 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I'd like to slightly adjust my previous answer. And oath would be a covenant as well An oath is simply a promise. One can make it without anything in return or in exchange for something In other words, all covenants we make our paths, but not all oaths are covenants.

Read Hebrews chapters 6 and 7 and you will see it is God the Father who swears the oath of the priesthood. For example, in Hebrews chapter 7 God the Father swears an oath to his Son saying, "Thou art a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." And in Hebrews chapter 6 God gives Abraham great promises relating to the priesthood, and then swears by an oath that he will fulfill those promises. The author explains the reason why God swears to fulfill his promises by an oath is because he cannot lie, and when the God who cannot lie swearis he will fulfill his promises by an oath it enables those who believe he cannot lie to develop a powerful and unshakable faith in him. Because God is all-powerful and cannot lie he is the one who can rightly swear to fulfill his promises by an oath. But because men are not all-powerful, and are prone to being less than perfectly honest, they can only make a covenant with God that they will do the best they can while relying on Christ to compensate for their imperfections as long as they remain faithful. When people make an oath (which is a one-way promise to another) to each other on the same subject, it becomes a covenant (a two-way, bound agreement). If we receive Him through the priesthood (in terms of power, role and group), He gives us all that He has. 1

Perhaps a better layout would be: Promise - us to God Covenant - us and God together Oath - God to us 3

They are both formulaic, and may be accompanied by gestures, signs, and symbols. 1

A careful study of oaths within scripture reveals a remarkable absence of them following Jesus' injunction, with Mormon actually repenting from an oath he swore. Actually, following the instruction of Christ, the only mentions of oaths are either among those practicing secret combinations, or God making them to his disciples.
