Bobbieaware Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I believe that the golden calf that the House of Israel had Aaron create so they could worship it was a god of their own invention. It was actually one of the pagan gods they left behind in Egypt. I believe it's name was Hathor. 1

mnn727 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 So is it possible to maintain a belief in the plan of salvation without believing in a literal Satan?Yes
Bobbieaware Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) But I still believe it was a god of their own invention.Look it up. The pagan Egyptian god Hathor, who had the form of a female calf, was an invention of the Egyptians. Do you not remember these rebellious children of Israel also longed to go back to the 'fleshpots of Egypt?' But if you want to believe they put there own particular spin on Hathor, who am I to say you are wrong? Edited October 12, 2015 by Bobbieaware

But if you want to believe they put there own particular spin on Hathor, who am I to say you are wrong? What difference does it make? Is there any question in your mind that humanity has a habit of creating its own gods, be they good or evil? 1

Maedros Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 The devil definitely exists and he is a being with power, real power: that can move mountains and turn rods into snakes and stuff. The evidence of his existence is evident among all the civilizations of world. His power is over all the earth and everything that dies or decays is the result of satan's power (I believe) - there are so many stories of the power of darkness that would send shivers down your spine. Some years ago I helped an aunt who left her abusive husband and moved her two girls into a bachelor flat - on the first night they slept in the one room and I slept in the lounge area...I was reading an Ensign and closed it and switched the lights off...five minutes later I hear this horrific scream that was so loud and beastly....I was startled and the next minute I hear this panting like a beast and lo and behold my aunt walks into the room with her hands over her eyes and she stopped in front of the couch where I slept - I got up and hugged her and switched the lights on and tried to comfort her and took her back to the room where she and her two daughters were sleeping. She says that while she was asleep she felt this weight being placed on her and she was held down and she saw these shadowy images and it felt as though they were trying to enter her, she couldn't move and when she lost all hope her hands slapped her face (covering her eyes) and she was lifted out of bed and walked to me (in the dark, in a place that she didn't know) - she felt as though she was smelling and took a shower. Her daughters heard nothing, the neighbours heard nothing - I was the only one who heard and interestingly I had the priesthood (they were not members) and she was most likely led to me (IN THE DARK) because of my faith (no boasting) and the priesthood. That was a small taste of the power of satan - there are many more experiences all over the world: Satan exists and he is a being with power. Yes, we don't need to live in fear of him but let us not make the mistake of doubting his existence since that too is part of his plan. 19 And now, when Moses had said these words, Satan cried with a loud voice, and ranted upon the earth, and commanded, saying: I am the Only Begotten, worship me. 20 And it came to pass that Moses began to fear exceedingly; and as he began to fear, he saw the bitterness of hell. Nevertheless, calling upon God, he received strength, and he commanded, saying: Depart from me, Satan, for this one God only will I worship, which is the God of glory. 1
SeekingUnderstanding Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 So no war in heaven? Who did the 1/3 host follow if it was not a literal being? Where do we stop with allegorical or symbolic figures and start with historical ones? Adam? Abraham? Jesus? For me, I think one cannot decide to reject some and accept others simply because the story line is less likely, so if we are saying some are real and others are not, on what basis is such a judgement made?In a long discussion about the primacy of agency in God's plan, Terryl Givens speculated that the one third that chose not to come to earth did so because they said "I can't live in a world where I have to countenance the rape of eight-year-old girls . . . . Those third simply rejected and repudiated their participation in that universe that God was presiding over, I don't think that He[God] cast them out" Source Mormon Stories interview part 2, ~40 minutes in.

It really isn't that hard to see why the third decided there must be a better way. Of course, none of us sees what God sees, I suppose. I mean we're here now. We might as well make the most of it.
