The Nehor Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 A couple of years ago I was living in China and an LDS Humanitarian aid senior missionary was very excited to tell me that around 1/4 of the humanitarian aid fund was going towards funding church branded wheel chairs to elderly. The second richest nation in the world was more than happy to take the mormon church's donation. A donation it didn't really need. The missionary I spoke with seemed pleased that the humanitarian aid fund was being used as a PR activity for the Chinese government and local authorities. I wondered to myself whether this was really the intended use of the funds people had in mind when making the additional offering beyond just their tithing. I know it's not what sister taught before. If you think the Chinese government was willing to pick up the slack if we hadn't I am afraid you don't know much about the Chinese government. I complain enough about my nation but I would complain more loudly if I lived there......assuming I had no family they could threaten. 2

It is easy to write out a big check if one does not care if a large chunk of the money is wasted. Throwing money at a problem usually does not solve the problem. Most billionaires that donate large sums of money do so in a slow, careful way. 1

If you're going to criticize, that's one thing, but at least bother to get your facts straight first!They bought it at one time.

If that's your stance, you would feel right at home in a Stalinist dictatorship. Do you own a vacation home in, perhaps, Cuba? (If you did, personally, I'd be worried about your ownership being subject to the whims of the Castro brothers, but hey, it's your money. VideoGameJunkie's implication clearly was misleading, and I believe intentionally so. And, carried to its logical conclusion, I would say that, by your logic, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is being exceedingly generous in allowing others to occupy land it once owned now.

"A donation it didn't really need"??? The church is trying to build a relationship with China and you think it is going to make a donation it doesn't really need? What kind of impact is that going to have? You really think that an assessment of needs was not conducted? You think the church is that careless with its resources that it would donate to a non-impactful PR or humanitarian program? Can a humanitarian donation not have the added benefit of improved relations with China? Or, if you prefer to look at it from your perspective, can a PR effort not have the added benefit of humanitarian aid? Either way you look at it, it is a win-win for all involved.
