CMZ Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Okay, so my first sacrament meeting talk in almost five years is coming up. I am looking for a couple quotes that I might be able to personally track down but maybe someone else could track them down quicker. First one is from Elder Holland where he talks about the importance of sacrament meeting and how we need to provide a qualitative spiritual experience for those who come earnestly seeking it. I believe this quote is from around 1994/95. The second one is an Orson Pratt quote where he prophesies of inventions that would come in the latter-days.

CMZ Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 That's a very, very good one. I feel terrible saying it's probably not the right one. I think the one I'm looking for is from a smaller setting than general conference (I kind of remember it maybe being for some FARMS symposium? maybe?). If I can't locate it I do think I might be able to use the following quote from the talk you linked to, Duncan: And everything that is said or sung or prayed in those services should be consistent with the grandeur of this sacred ordinance. Thanks. 1

CMZ Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Looking through this talk now and I do remember it. But I think this version cut out the part where Elder Holland said, "President Benson and Elder McConkie aren't exactly what we would call flaming liberals." (not that that will have anything to do with my talk)
Ahab Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Just wing it, recalling from your memory what you think they meant. The Spirit can help you to know if what you are thinking is true anyway so I don't understand what the fascination is for wanting to find other people who have said what you can say just as well.
CMZ Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) If I can find the quote then great. If not, then oh well. Edited March 7, 2015 by CMZ

pogi Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Do not do this. Misquoting is rude and misleading. Well, my sister's boyfriends uncle heard from his pet groomer who heard from a general authority in his stake conference that it is ok to recall from memory and say "what you think they meant", so that others can pass the truth on from generation to generation without the burden of having to find what they actually said...or something like that. I only said it would be worth it.Please attribute the above quote to me if you should ever choose to use it.
Ahab Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Do not do this. Misquoting is rude and misleading. What I meant is that it's okay to paraphrase the idea you got from someone else while maybe saying something like "I remember (so and so) saying something about (what you recall from that message) and I think"...while you just wing it from there.Like how I would say something like "I remember Joseph saying something about God telling him not to join any of the churches in his day because those professors of religion were all corrupt and I think that was good advice. Notice I didn't quote the Lord exactly but I still conveyed the gist of his message. And then I would continue my talk to speak as the Spirit moved me. 1
Calm Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) The problem with paraphrasing is misremembering as when so many paraphrase Joseph as saying he was told all the churches were abominations.Double checking and using quotes rather than paraphrases allows yourself and others to know better if you are correct in your teaching. I can tell you that I would drift off hearing a talk like that convinced that the speaker had no little to no idea what they are talking about. "saying something about" and "wing it"? .....nope. I appreciate the power of spontaneous speaking. My notes for most talks are usually written in 10 words or less plus any quotes I plan on using. If I am called up unexpectedly I will quote from memory or use scriptures. The Brethren rarely paraphrase or speak vaguely. 1
