People On The Moon?

Do you think they should have a degree to prepare for the ministry?  Seems I have heard that somewhere.

Nope. Though it might be helpful to know something about it before becoming a minister in that religion. Even the Church employes trained professionals for its Social Services.

Well, the moon landings were faked.

I'm sure you don't believe they were faked, but for what it's worth they did all the calculations correct to get to the Moon whether they went or not.

A few years ago I was tasked with designing preliminary abort trajectories for the planned return trips to the moon. As part of this work a suite of software tools needed to be built to analyze the lunar missions. In order to verify our analysis we asked for and received the trajectory planning and tracking data from the original Apollo missions (some of it had not been seen since the 60s). We re-ran the Apollo scenarios and they would have landed a man on the moon safely every time. It's amazing what they were able to accomplish given the technical limitations they were working with. I was able to reproduce in a few weeks with my desktop PC what had taken them 1000s of hours to complete in the 60s with rooms full of biological computers (people doing math).

Just so there is no confusion we did land on the moon in the 60s. We left a laser ranging experiment there and to this day we still bounce lasers off of it.

Alas congress cut the funding for the planned return lunar missions, and all my work was for naught. That's what it's like working for the government. What's a billion in unused work between friends?

He was not shy in speaking his mind.

I remember that he wrote that Christ appeared almost immediately after the destruction, despite the clear statement in the text that it was at least a year later.  Some of his comments against evolution were.... well, silly.

Since he was wrong about the moon he was wrong about evolution. Good logic.

Ever heard of the concept of a sunk cost?

Ever heard of the concept of a sunk cost?

In traditional microeconomic theory, only prospective (future) costs are relevant to an investment decision. Traditional economics proposes that economic actors should not let sunk costs influence their decisions. Doing so would not be rationally assessing a decision exclusively on its own merits. Alternatively, a decision-maker might make rational decisions according to their own incentives, outside of efficiency or profitability. This is considered to be an incentive problem and is distinct from a sunk cost problem.

Good grief. I hadn't realized I had been posting on the Friendship Village Retirement Community Board until now. So...for those who are old and that seems like many of you...what were Cain and Abel like? Or Noah? Just curious.

Oh and tonight we will be having Mexican food. We will make sure that the tacos are ground beef and not shredded. Wouldn't want to cause denture problems. We'll even have extra jello-y flan for desert.

A little historical information about the moon men idea. At the time of Joseph Smith, this idea that people were living on the moon was being propagated by many of the contemporary scientists. In 1976 Patrick Moore, Director of the Lunar Section of the British Astronomical Association, wrote of William Herschel:

"As an observer it is possible that he has never been equaled, and between 1781 and his death, in 1822, every honor that the scientific world could bestow came is way. His views about life in the Solar System were, then, rather surprising. He thought it possible that there was a region below the Sun's fiery surface where men might live, and he regarded the existence of life on the Moon as 'an absolute certainty.'"

Also in 1822, the German astronomer Gruithuisen announced that he had discovered a lunar city with a collection of gigantic ramparts extending 23 miles in either direction. It was not until 1838, with the publication of the writings of Beer and Madler, that the scientific world concluded that the moon is definitely unable to support higher life forms. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young may have just agreed with the popular notion of the day that there could be men on the moon. The whole subject has no importance or relevancy anyway when it comes to religious matters.

The conspiracy theory is alive and well, being believed by (at various times) 6% to 20% of the US population, and as high as 28% in Russia.

Truth be told, my maternal grandmother (who died in 1968) believed the moon landings were fakes, despite having watched them on TV. Different generation; different beliefs.

Well that's easier than cutting off an arm or some other.... nevermind.

In a couple of hundred years I wonder what will be thought about those who believed in a global flood.

And then we have a flat earth....

And then we have.... the present belief that science has anything whatsoever to do with religion, quaint notion that it is.

"Sunk cost" is  ivory tower stuff.  They are unfamiliar with the common sense "throwing good money after bad" principle.

I have a used car I would love to sell you.

That it maybe. I've bought a few used cars in my life. I don't put a lot of money into them, and get a different cars when the cost of the repairs, maintenance, along with the cost of lost opportunities exceed the cost of a newer car.

Come now , mfb, you know that science is on the verge of establishing the scientific principles behind the atonement. :nea:

Yes I know they are working on the Aton-O-Matic Meter to measure Aton-O-Waves.

The problem is that all they can intercept right now are Negative Aton-O-Waves from all the evil being generated, but it is believed they are ultimately counteracted by a huge flux of Positive Aton-O-Waves which emitted from an unknown source around 2,000 years ago, probably located somewhere in the Middle East.

Or it could just be a blip in the background radiation- who knows?

Some Christians maintain that it came from Jesus Christ, but of course that is pure speculation and no causal link can be established. Pure superstition.

Stephen Hawking said yesterday that there will be people living on the moon within 50 years. Maybe Joseph Smith (or whoever actually said it) was on to something.

It won't be this people. I prefer air.

The sad truth is that until we come up with a space colonization plan that is economically viable we are unlikely to see funding for it. Well, either that or China starts a vigorous space program and we have to beat them to show American superiority. Basically I am rooting for China to get this new space race rolling.

There are plenty of raw materials on the moon to exploit, though the lack of carbon is a limiting element. The real rub comes in with transportation costs estimated at a little less than $16,000,000 per pound to get it there and back.

There is a lot of raw material but it needs to very valuable to be viable. Platinum maybe?

Maybe gold plated Latinum. ;)

I think a better case could be made if mining, refining and manufacturing were for off earth use only. Again hydrocarbons would be a limiting factor, However they are common enough in the solar system that shouldn't present insurmountable problems. To me the knowledge we gain is every bit as important to whatever physical goods we gain. The science is there. What we lack is the technological advances and the political will to do it. The real question to me is are we going to continue to be a space ferrying people or not?

I had to give you a point just for the Star Trek reference.  I've been watching Deep Space Nine on Netflix so this made me chuckle.
