SALT LAKE CITY — An anonymous donor in Utah’s Islamic community will match donations up to $100,000 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines.

Donations can be made at any Zions Bank branch or through the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake City.

“We have a deadline until this Friday to collect whatever we can collect. We need a lot of help. He’s (the anonymous donor) going to match whatever we collect up to $100,000. At this Thanksgiving time, it would be really great if every community could help us,” said Aden Batar, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake City.

LDS Humanitarian Services has been providing direct aid to typhoon survivors since the waters receded after the superstorm on Nov. 8.

Government sources say Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 3,600 people and 1.9 million are homeless.

“It’s devastating. People don’t have shelter. There’s still a shortage of food and all the basic supplies,” Batar said.

Bruce Muir, director of Church Emergency Response for the LDS Church, said in times of need, the church responds to disasters with materials and manpower. “Those efforts are enhanced when communities come together for the benefit of others,” Muir said in a prepared statement from the Islamic Society.

The Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake City regularly partners with the LDS Church on other humanitarian issues, Batar said.

“We as Muslims have a responsibility to help people in need," Batar said. "I know there are people of many faiths in that country. We are helping because we are all children of God and we want to help them.”

I love this story on so many levels. Is there any way to make a donation "remotely?" Or only in the bank in person?

Ditto, can we contribute from California?

In the article it has this:

"Bruce Muir, director of Church Emergency Response for the LDS Church, said in times of need, the church responds to disasters with materials and manpower."

Does this mean the church doesn't give monetarily?  I hope not.  I think the church should give $ also.  I love the idea to donate this way.  But hope the church does also.  Of course I know they are helping with so many disasters, but if it's within their means, I can hope for that.

I don't understand what you mean.  The Church has given direct aid.  It gives materials - that means food, water, tents, clothes, medicine etc. All those things have to be paid for, they aren't given by suppliers for free - that's what money collected for disaster relief is used for - to pay for food, tents and other shelters, water, medicine, clothes, blankets etc.  The Church doesn't need to give money to disaster relief, it already uses its money to pay for the items it has stored ready to hand over to those in disaster hit areas.

So our donations hopefully will do the same thing.  Thanks for the clarification.  But could a fund be held for future help, monetarily? ETA:  meaning a fund for them to rebuild their lives?  Or is this possible with their laws or leadership?

I'm sure that's exactly what your donations will do.  I don't think any organisation gives money to people in disaster areas, if that's what you mean by helping in the future monetarily.  Initially, people need temporary shelter, blankets, food and water.  As time passes, they need clothes, stoves, better shelters, medicine and other medical equipment eg bandages, crutches etc and obviously they continue to need food and water.  often purification plants or other systems are installed where appropriate.  Infrastructure like roads and bridges need to be rebuilt and temporary structures often go in.  Money continues to be needed to provide all these items.  The manufacturers don't provide them for free.  This is why donations need to continue long after the initial event.  Disaster Relief is a long term matter and these days is well coordinated with the various organisations who provide aid - governments, religions, Red Cross and Red Crescent, Medicens sans frontiers, charities - to name but a few!  The UN coordinates it - they have a list of what's required and set up schedules to try to ensure that aid gets to everyone and that its not duplicated with some missing out altogether (this has happened in the past).  I don't think people always realise just how much is needed and what a huge task it is.  Billions will be needed for the Philippines, for a number of years, as they rebuild.  Haiti is still recovering.  So, please contribute as much as you can, for as long as you can.  As for a Church Fund - that's what the humanitarian aid section on the tithing slip is for.

I've called the number and left a message about friends wanting to donate that live out of the state and even the country.  Someone else might want to try the email address to see if that gets a quicker response.  He may be getting flooded with calls at the moment from press, etc.

Ahab, take that discussion elsewhere, this thread is only about those interested in donating for this cause.

Dan Peterson recommended it, DeseretNews recommended it, I trust that they researched it enough so that the money will go where it is needed.

The situation in the Philippines is absolutely terrible.  But here’s a chance to help.

Think you can’t do much?

You can.  And especially in this case.

Your $50 here will be worth $100.  Your $100 will be worth $200.  Even a ten dollar donation will instantly become a twenty dollar contribution:

But, if you’re going to act, you need to act quickly.  The deadline is Friday.

Please give.  I’m going to.  And, whether you give or not, please spread the word.  Immediately.  Don’t forget.

(Incidentally, I’m pretty confident that I know the anonymous donor.  A wonderful person.  And the anonymity isn’t a surprise.)

I have not heard; are we not doing anything via fast offering. A letter from First Presidency, for donations should bring in millions in a single Sunday. We have done it before...I forget the event but I seem to remember we raise 8,000,000 in one Sunday once.
