Sixth Seal... Seventh Seal? Who Really Knows?

According to Revelation 6:12-17, this earthquake must happen during the sixth seal. No historical worldwide event seems to fulfill this scripture. Thus, it would appear that we are still living during the sixth seal.

 12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as eblood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her
untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
 14
And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
 15 And the
kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
 16 And said to the
mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
 17 For the great
day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

I always understood that the seventh seal is the millenium in which Christ will reign. So we wouldn't be out of the sixth seal until then.  But I could be wrong.

Yes, that is a good overview, but the actuality of the opening of the 7th seal is neither confirmed nor denied and the timing allows a bit of wiggle room. A quote from the above referenced text is as follows:

"The sixth seal covers the sixth thousand year period, which generally would be about 1000A.D. to 2000 A.D."

I feel like the earthquake event is on the not-to-distant horizon -  I won't discontinue my earthquake insurance just yet : )

The verses above do not give the impression that this earthquake

lasts very long, but some seem to believe the sixth seal period lasts

1,000 years. Neither the earthquake or the black sun period last

that long though.

I know Dr. Cohen believed than 2012 was an important year, does anyone have an update?

Any year is an important year.  If it doesn't happen there are some serious repercussions.  :sorry:

Local cataclysm vs Global cataclysm - Maybe already happened? Might happen still and could go unnoticed...

Mt St. Helens blackened the sun over a considerable area for a few days.

I assume that Revelation 6:12 was borrowing from Joel when he said the sun shall be darkened and the moon turned into blood.  I remember being surprised when Pres. Hinckley stated in general conference in 2001 that this vision "has been fulfilled."

He said:

The era in which we live is the fulness of times spoken of in the scriptures, when God has brought together all of the elements of previous dispensations. From the day that He and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world. The hearts of men have turned to their fathers in fulfillment of the words of Malachi. The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared:
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
“And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
“And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call” (Joel 2:28–32).

The seals are representations of general periods of about--but not always exactly--1,000 years.  The events described are key elements of history in each roughly 1,000 period covered by each of the seals.  Several decades ago, I went through the Bible and JST Bible, as well as afterward combed through historical materials (both ancient and modern), as well as receiving a touch of personal revelation, to arrive at that conclusion.

We also have to realize that our Gregorian calendar differs from the Jewish calendar system by about 226 years at the time of this writing.  Whose calendar do we think John went by?  Certainly not the Gregorian calendar, to be sure.

MormonMason,

your comment makes me wonder how the "seven churches in Asia" received, & understood John's message.

Any thoughts on that?

MormonMason,

your comment makes me wonder how the "seven churches in Asia" received, & understood John's message.

There are only three chapters that are specific to the seven Churches.  The rest was more general.  There were those who understood the gist of the information contained in Revelation.  It should be recalled that members of the Church of that time, at least a portion of them, were used to symbolism and parables.  They were communicating wisdom in such a way of initiation that outsiders (those who were not "perfect"; "codespeak" for the uninitiated) wouldn't learn of it by communicating it "in a mystery."  (See 1 Corinthians 2:7 [6-9]).  The words used by Paul in that passage are the same words used in the mystery religions.

Of course, there are those who would say that the words cannot possibly mean what they say or what they meant to everyone in the outside world who would have seen and/or heard these words read, because that would mean that Christians were keeping secret teachings from the masses and we know that we cannot have that in the sectarian world.  Everybody knows true Christians didn't keep secrets and have mysteries and secret/sacred teachings not fit for outsiders and inexperienced members!  Evangelicals tell me so!

Seriously, though, I'm sure many did not understand what John wrote, but it was necessary to hide things within coded messages to avoid drawing the ire of the Roman Emperor beyond what he already was experiencing in his banishment on Patmos.  A lot of material in Revelation directly discussed the doings and happenings in Rome, both then and in the future.  On that side of the coin, a large number of churches rejected the book out of hand.  To this day, it is omitted from the canon of a significant number of the Churches of the East.  A rival Revelation of John actually rose up and was read in some places, as well.  The rival text never made it into anyone's canon, however, insofar as I am aware.

The worse thing, however, is that there are two versions of Revelation that circulated that are different in significant details.  One was the common Koine text and the other was the text of Revelation like that found in the Commentaries of Andreas, the manuscripts being divided pretty much evenly on the variant readings.  Some texts read 616 for the number of "the beast" that was the number of his name, while others read 666.  One manuscript actually reads "the beginning of the Church of God" rather than "the beginning of the creation of God," with reference to Christ.  That was a deliberate scribal alteration, apparently because the scribe did not like the implication of the Greek text that Jesus was first among the created.  Anyway, I'm rambling now so will stop here.
