Emergency workers and community members in eastern Missouri are not sure what to make of a mystery priest who showed up at a critical accident scene Sunday morning and whose prayer seemed to change life-threatening events for the positive.

Even odder, the black-garbed priest does not appear in any of the nearly 70 photos of the scene of the accident in which a 19-year-old girl almost died. No one knows the priest and he vanished without a word, said Raymond Reed, fire chief of New London, Mo.

I have no particular conclusions about this beyond what was reported. The people involved are open to it being a nice but mortal man who just happened to get away. It is interesting that "anointing oil" is specifically mentioned, but dressed all in black with a clerical collar doesn't seem to fit Three Nephite/John the Revelator accounts, as far as I know...

[sure wish I could edit that little typo in my topic title.]

Explain to me what I saw in Kirtland, Ohio.

What did you see? I can't explain it without being told what you saw. Maybe Daniel could. Sorry, I couldn't resist the joke, however lame. As I said in my OP I have no particular conclusions about this story beyond what was reported. And I also hinted at the possibility that perhaps the Three Nephites and/or John the Revelator might've appeared in garb resembling that of a Catholic priest. So, no big argument here. Still, I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at.

Why do John and the Three Nephites always get the credit? I mean, there are whole cities that have been translated.

Yep, there's definitely others. I think "John and the Three Nephites" tend to get credit because they were given assignments to stay on the earth, but it could certainly be other people, including a Catholic priest who showed up at just the right time in a relatively isolated area, who nobody in the area knows, who was not seen in any of the 69 photos taken, and who vanished before anyone could thank him. Even the people there said it could quite well have been a mere mortal.

I was driving through Kirtland, Ohio and saw a man on a white horse with a sword pointing at the side of the road, telling me to stop.

If it were me I would've stopped and said, "Are you the one who commanded Joseph Smith to live polygamy?"

I am in the middle of reading "The Savior in Kirtland" right now and just read of a number of accounts of angels being seen on white horses in and around the time of the temple dedication.

There is also the report of the little girl who went home and told her mother that there were angels on top of the temple... Anyone have a reference for this? Or more information...

It really isn't that difficult. Just look at Acts 2:7 and Joel 2:28. I think that we would see these things and more if we asked and expected them. Our culture is so steeped in unbelief.

I'm not steeped in unbelief. Did you stop for the man on the white horse?

If you mean the capitalized 's, it's not a typo, it's a program glitch.

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I get worried about little things like that. Thanks.

You're referring to the Kirtland Temple dedication?

Yes... I've seen several references to that incident...

Suppose that the being who appeared were formerly of this world. The scripture says, "For behold, the Lord doth grant unto all nations, of their own nation and tongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he seeth fit that they should have; therefore we see that the Lord doth counsel in wisdom, according to that which is just and true" (Alma 29: 8 ). I wonder if a similar principle might be at work here. Is it possible for a Catholic priest (or a cleric from some other denomination) to appear as a disembodied spirit? I can't rule it out. If someone is more likely to be comforted by such an appearance than s/he would be by the "Mormon conception" of an angel, who's to say that the Lord wouldn't oblige? After all, as I've said on this Board many, many times before, I don't believe that the Lord gives me bread, fish, and fruit while giving my non-Mormon brothers and sisters stones, serpents, thorns and thistles. (See Matt. 7:9-10, 16).

Lots of Christian denominations use oil for anointing, so why is the mention of "anointing oil" interesting?

Not me. I have actually thought of that same explanation. I didn't bring the story up to force an explanation on anyone or to rule anything out.

Nor do I.

Okay, it's not interesting. You win. Thanks for shooting me down for saying something was interesting. The only reason I thought it was interesting is because it was a specific detail in the story beyond just "two people praying together." Never said it had anything to do with anything about a specific denomination. That's an assumption of your own fabrication.

Three cities, but they couldn't get the Bible translated correctly? One book? What's up with that?

I can't get a paragraph translated correctly in less then a week where I work so I sympathize.
