Alan Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 It was announced a few months ago that the church is publishing new scriptures.....that is, updated scriptures.They said there was no need for people to go out and buy the new ones, as the changes were not substantial. However, I need to get a new set so I might as well get the new ones. Does anyone know when they are going to be available?

Does anyone know when they are going to be available?I think the Church is trying to spare us the expense of replacing our hard-copy scriptures right off the bat. However, I have found there is considerable updating of explanatory material in chapter synopses and section headers, etc., this based on the latest scholarship from the Joseph Smith Papers Project. Also, misleading references to "Nephite coinage" and Lamanites being the "principal ancestors" of American Indians, to select two examples, have been cleaned up. I like having up-to-the-minute content, and that is just one advantage I see to using the freely accessible, no-cost, electronic editions of the scriptures. 1

(the old dog, new tricks thingy). GGNothing wrong with that. I agree there is an aesthetic quality to a good, hard-copy volume. I have most of the already released letterpress volumes in the Joseph Smith Papers Project, even though I understand the entire content -- including material that will never be published in hard copy -- will eventually be accessible on line. And I'll probably eventually have a nice print version of the new edition of the scriptures too, though it will probably sit on the shelf for the most part, next to my old missionary scriptures and my more recent quad.

The nice thing about having an electronic version is that I can take it with me anywhere on a device that fits in my shirt pocket, so it's with me pretty much everywhere I go, along with many other books I have on the same device. The paper books are best for when I have something to rest it on, since they're a little too heavy for me to want to keep holding in my hands.

I, for one, am very glad to ditch all paper LDS publications of any kind. I've earned that right, by carrying around heavy full-size scriptures all through my mission.

I suppose I'll end up with both, but I'll take my print version to Church and use them here at home. But I could enjoy being able to take something when I sit on the beach or sit quietly on a hike... nice to be able to take out my little device and turn to the scriptures... yes, nice.
