Elaine Dalton'S Talk At Conference

I said this before, and upon reflection I want to say it again.

The fact that women have been SPEAKING in General Conference for years and years now kind of makes giving an opening or closing prayer seem a little, you know, ANTI-CLIMACTIC.

I think that the gravitas of speaking in GC kind of outweighs the gravitas of giving a prayer.

So, after all, big whoop.

I tend to agree, but there are some I suppose who cling to the idea of opening and closing prayers as "invocations" and "benedictions" and therefore see them as Priesthood-like activities. I guess I have been tainted by the explanation Father Kirby gave to his graduate students at Notre Dame as to why he always started his undergraduate classes with prayer, "It's the only way I could come up with to get the Freshmen to shut up."

A prayer is an encounter with God. That is pretty significant in my view. It is in a different category than a sermon, both are significant but in different ways. Simply because one has been done on a regular basis since 1984 does not diminish the significance of this being the first time for the other.

Conference talks rarely are new or on previously unheard topics.

just a minute, just a minute, just a minute! This is new! haha! Elder Hyrum M. Smith of the Twelve said,

"Skating rinks are a menace, and at the present time the desire to frequent them is a craze. They are being introduced in certain Stakes of Zion, and the young people are going wild over this pastime, which they carry to excess. As a result of enthusiasm in relation to this so-called pleasure we mark the downfall of far too many young men and young women. I disapprove of these and other places of amusement where young people are thrown promiscuously into the society of the wicked, who care neither for God nor man, for virtue or decency." I don't have a definition for this term. My question was to the original

poster.

Gail

A definition for the term "mormon feminist": an individual who sees gender inequality in the lds church and through activism, seeks to change such inequality through structural change in the lds church.

However, if i am a mormon and a feminist and see no such inequality in the lds church, I would not be welcomed in the Mormon feminist movement even though by wording, I am a Mormon feminist.

It seems to me every conference where there has been something controversial going on the GA's address it. A lot of the discussions we have here are addressed in Conference, not that I think they read this site or even FB but that they are spiritually aware of the issues people are dealing with.

Doubt they come on here also.

I did not see anything that would offend feminists. The analogy about her going from vacuuming the carpet to standing over the carpet was great. It seemed like she was teaching that female and male would be equal. In heaven or at least higher then they can imagine.

Really wish Sister Dalton and her counselors could be yw presidency when my daughters are of age.

I also really liked it.

I'm sure there are people that won't appreciate it but I don't think there's anything she said that was specifically provoking, other than not declaring that the lds church is sexist as some would have wanted.

Am seeing some complaints on FB over the remark about "stealing virtue" -- and the message it sends to rape victims that their virtue has been stolen. Other than that, don't see much about the talk.

The only thing I disagreed with is her saying that you must go attend college to be producers in the world. I do agree that education is key to success. However, I do not agree you must attend college in order to be a producer. There are plenty of skilled workers and laborers that are poducers. I think of Apostle Christofferson's talk last Priesthood session in which he recognized the great work of skilled workers.

It really is nothing, but still the devil is in the details.

Probably meant to include Technical College and even skilled workers would probably need to learn Chinese so they can communicate better with their future employers.

Huh, never would have guessed, I always thought the term just meant a feminist who also happened to be a Mormon and consequently marginalized and isolated by their religion, didn't know it meant anything specifically with the Church in mind. Learn something new everyday.

Within the context of the church, a mormon feminist is centered in the lds faith. However, feminists who are mormons can be radical feminists, socialist feminists, marxist feminists, liberal feminists etc. A feminist always has a prefix before feminist to describe the discipline of feminism they are involved in.

Not any of the feminists I have known, that sounds more like social conservatives hanging an additional label on them in order to justify disregarding the general premise of gender equality or gender stereotyping.

I once met Elaine Dalton and had a chance to visit with her for some time. I was in a position of leadership and she was interested in what I had to say it seemed. She was a counselor in the general YW presidency then. She seemed like a very nice person and very concerned about young women.

Why am I seeing FB posts about her not being able to swim?

Have you studied feminism? They are listed among other labels in general introductions to feminism books You can also google search them. Many feminist academics have a label in front of their feminism. Take a look at this link and notice the book description and then get back to me.

Now whether or not the average mormon feminist understands the different disciplines within feminism...well...I don't know.

No have not studied feminism, but have observed feminists in daily political life before a myriad of Town Councils, etc. They may need to invent a new label, since their old one has been turned into a hiss and a by-word in many conservative circles.

Back in the day, the 70's, there wasn't many disciplines of feminism. There were Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan leading the charge. But as feminism became an academic discipline in universities with women studies departments and now gender studies department, feminism began to fracture into many disciplines and flavors. Now we have mormon feminism but this has an uclear foundation and it is still in its infantile state.

One reason if find it odd for people to hang on every word, as though each talk was written by some secret department of speech writers.

How do you know there isn’t a secret department of speech writers? The Church has a lot to lose if one of the speakers has a horribly said, but well intended, speech, or a talk with something that is not Church doctrine. I would be shocked if they don’t ask the speakers to send their talks in to be checked for understandability. I don’t know if there are speech writers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone, everyone, that talks, takes speech writing, and public speaking, classes.

Kind of a professional Holy Ghost committee?
