Near Earth Asteroid Coverage At 2:00 Pm Est Today

Closest approach at 2:25 pm EST.

Passes within the ring of geosynchronous satellites orbiting the earth to within 17,150 miles of the earth's surface. To my knowledge it's about 150 feet in diameter so I don't think one will see much more than a blob from the ground based observations. Perhaps a radar map will be made. It is estimated that there are about 500,000 of these types/sizes of objects, both asteroids and comets, that are near or cross the earth's orbit and less than 1 percent of them have been discovered.

CHELYABINSK, Russia—

A meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, raining fireballs over a wide area and causing a shock wave that smashed windows, damaged buildings and injured more than 1,000 people.

People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt the shock wave, according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow.

The fireball, travelling at a speed of 30 km (19 miles) per second according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, had blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail that could be seen as far as 200 km (125 miles) away.

Small potatoes really in the cosmic sense of things. The earth gets hits with ones that size about every ten years or so. Though mostly in the oceans, or uninhabited areas. ELE's are more rare, thankfully. Planet killers even more so.
