The Gathering Of The Elect To New Jerusalem

Moses 7:62 says, "And righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send

forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the

dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause

to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the

earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their

loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle,

and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem".

Why are only the elect gathered to New Jerusalem before Jesus returns? Is this because

other areas are being destroyed?

Thanks,

Jim

There will not be a replacement for the real Jerusalem because there's no reasonable evidence to suggest such. Just like the Jews are and always be God's chosen people. Gotta maintain the covenant (Abrahamic Covenant and prophecy of Jeremiah).

So you don't accept the revelations about New Jerusalem in the D&C or in Ether?

Nope. I maintain a Biblical response. I'm no longer a "Restorationist" in any "traditional" definition. The Bible is the primary authority. All else comes in a far 2nd or 3rd.

You are right, there will be no replacement, the old Jerusalem will still exist. Sense when were the jews God's only chosen people? I thought there were 12 tribes of Israel that will be gathered. What of those gentiles who were adopted into the covenant through baptism in the bible?

Read the Hebrew Bible. The gentiles will be adopted. Next, read the New Perspective on Paul. MAINTAIN COVENANT...that is key.

Or, you could tell me in one or two simple paragraphs why the other 11 tribes are not part of the Abrahamic covenant.

Leaning Episcopal.

May I ask what led you to lean this way (and are you aware of the Episcopal Church USA having sanctioned the ordination of a practicing homosexual bishop living in a committed same-sex relationship, which is viewed as heretical by the EO and most of the Anglican Communion)?

I think it is because the wicked will not be gathered to the New Jerusalem, literally or figuratively. While all the elect cannot be gathered into one physical locale before the Second Coming, enough will the gathered to fulfill the Lord's purposes, and all will be gathered into the Church. At the Second Comig, all the elect will meet Him, and where this involves the uniting of Zion with the New Jerusalem (figuratively and literally), only the elect will be gathered in this instance as well.

I think the scriptures best answer the initial query. scriptures.lds is down right now (at least I can't get to it) so I offer the verses from our D&C 45...

11c ye hear of wars in foreign lands, but, behold, I say unto you, They are nigh, even at your doors, and not many years hence ye shall hear of wars in your own lands.

12a Wherefore, I the Lord have said, Gather ye out from the eastern lands, assemble ye yourselves together ye elders of my church;

12b go ye forth unto the western countries, call upon the inhabitants to repent, and inasmuch as they do repent, build up churches unto me;

12c and with one heart and with one mind, gather up your riches that ye may purchase an inheritance which shall hereafter be appointed unto you, and it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the most high God;

12d and the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it; and it shall be called Zion.

13a And it shall come to pass, among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor, must needs flee unto Zion for safety.

13b And there shall be gathered unto it out of every nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another.

Leaning Episcopal.

Has anything in particular caused you to lean in that direction?

Did you ever have a testimony of the LDS Church?

And when you say "Episcopal," do you mean the Episcopal Church USA?

I know about Gene Robinson's ordination. That was a while ago. Keep in mind that the Church of England, the Reformed Episcopalian (USA), and other Anglican based churches share an older paradigm of thought and are anti-progressive.

I felt inclined to attend the Episcopal church because of its traditional worship and progressive values. They take scripture seriously but not literally. The allow a great deal of room for doubts. The parish I attend is very diverse. What made it easy for me to embrace it was the fact that we aren't going to agree on all theological matters.

I did a long time ago. I was raised in it. I love the Bible and I hold it as the standard by which any other scripture should be measured. I see Jesus and his ministry come to life in it. Reading the Bible is like breathing fresh air and communing with God in such a deep way. I don't think i ever experienced that with the Book of Mormon or other LDS scripture. I'm not speaking badly of them either. The Book of Mormon is a good story written in bad King James English, again, no disrespect.

Jackson County is not Zion nor is Independence the centerplace. IMO, of course.

And you are entitled to your opinion, however flawed (IMO, of course) that it may be. :)

BTW, New Jerusalem is much larger than Jackson Co.

I know but I didn't want to draw the post out to include Caldwell or Daviess.

Leaning Episcopal.

I guessed as much, when your picture switched from a hammer and sickle to the episcopal coat of arms :)

You know, there is Anglican-rite (usage) in the Roman Catholic Church now... you could come swim across the Tiber and retain the Anglican rites and traditions (including married priests, if they were married prior to ordination).

All roads lead to Rome ;)
