Damien the Leper Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 What do you think a party convention is supposed to be about? Of course there is propaganda. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.Fascism? Godwin much?To whom did I make an unjustly comparison? Straw man much?
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Did Romney speak about the church? I had the TV on, but was somewhat distracted by my one year old granddaughter, who was visiting (a rather nice distraction )..but, I did really want to hear more of his speech. I'm sure there must be a transcript online. I'll have to look for it.
Garden Girl Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Did Romney speak about the church? I had the TV on, but was somewhat distracted by my one year old granddaughter, who was visiting (a rather nice distraction )..but, I did really want to hear more of his speech. I'm sure there must be a transcript online. I'll have to look for it.While Romney mentioned the Church in general, he let other speakers tell stories about his service as a bishop... one mother told about how he helped them through the serious illness at their daughter's birth and then when the daughter at age 26 died almost two years ago how the Romneys contacted them after all those years... another told how their 14 year old son had terminal leukemia, and how the boy asked Romney to help him write his will, which he did, showing up at their home with his yellow legal pad, sitting with the boy... there were other stories that LDS individuals told that showed Romney to be a compassionate, caring person as a "pastor"... and other speakers told of their experiences with him as a Bain Capital person... I hope these stories help his critics see Romney as someone who does indeed relate well to people and his concern for them... critics are always saying he is stiff and doesn't seem to be able to "relate" to everyday people. The newsperson was Megyn Kelley who said it was the first time she had heard those stories... C-Span carried the full convention...GG
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 A lot of typos and editing errors, but here it is:http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/30/transcript-mitt-romney-speech-at-rnc/
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Thanks, GG. I did hear some of those stories. CNN carried the full Convention, as well. I just didn't really get to hear his speech, tonight, so had wondered what, if anything, he had said about the church. He did speak in generalities, it seems, which was appropriate, I think, for the setting. He is kind of stiff, IMO, but I have no doubt he is a good person. I have absolutely nothing against him, personally. I just very much disagree with his politics.

I have absolutely nothing against him, personally. I just very much disagree with his politics. He looked like a friggin' robot as he walked the aisle toward the podium. I thought his comment about being a Mormon in Michigan not being a big deal was good. That's probably the way he needs to play it . . . it's really not a big deal. I am saddened that he has allowed his campaign and others (including his wife) to misuse President Obama's "You didn't built that" comment to suggest that Obama was saying something that he obviously was not saying. Jon Stewart gets it; why can't they? It does not encourage me that we will see a campaign built on integrity. Overall, I was underwhelmed by Romney. I loved Rubio's "more government less freedom" gaffe.
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Mark, I didn't like the misuse of the President's statement, either. I could say a lot more about "errors" in many of the speeches, including Romney's, but I don't want to get too political. I think the debates will be interesting.
thesometimesaint Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Libs:Since the advent of the Television Age. The Presidential "Debates" have been more about show than about substance. Those that saw the Nixon/Kennedy debate on television thought Kennedy won. While those that heard it on the radio thought Nixon won.Time hasn't made them any better and in many ways worse.
Tacenda Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 While watching Romney and Ryan (handsome fellows), it reminded me of the time Clinton and Gore were at the Democratic convention, both with their blond wives too! Sometimes I think if the candidate looks the part they'll get more votes. Ron Paul was one of my favorites, but I wonder if his looks hurt him. Not the tall, dark and handsome....why do we judge on looks? Or am I just blowin' smoke?
thesometimesaint Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Tacenda:Show over substance. People naturally gravitate to the more handsome man and the more beautiful woman. It works in the supermarket too. Most consumers will pick to better looking fruit/ the perfect vegetable over the equally nutritious but uglier one.
Zakuska Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 GG:Great to talk with you at any time. I'm not arguing so I apologize that I came across that way to you.Romney's JFK speech sounded sincere to both of us, but then both of us are LDS(A small often misunderstood religious minority). From articles in the Newspapers and the Internet few believed him. So that is what I'm basing my statements on. I know what the Church teaches. However from Romney's own words I honestly don't know what he actually believes. I take him at his word he is LDS. His own campaign manager calls him the "Etch-A-Sketch" candidate. Is he going to govern, assuming he is elected, as he governed in Massachusetts? As a moderate "Pro-choice" Republican, or is he the "Severe Republican" Personhood Amendment "Absolutely" as he is running as now? I don't know. Does anyone know other than Romney? If one is the true Romney, and the other just for show. Which one is it? I sure don't know.Warm weather and cool beach breezes to you dear friend.the whole etch-a-sketch comment had nothing to do with Romney or his policies, as the media has made it out to be. It was his campaign advisors attempt at saying that for the next leg of the campaign you have to clean the slate, wipe off the white board, and begin a new on your strategy. The media and Obama campaign turned the unfortunate comment into some sort of admission of flip-flopping.
Zakuska Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 Did I miss something? I didn't hear much about the church. Kinda glad he didn't do alot of speaking on it. I think what the American public wants to hear are the plans he has in mind for helping the nation.Me as well. Other than the opening prayer, and 3 talks by church members.
thesometimesaint Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Zakuska:I know what he said, and the context which he said it. While the media did run with it, that's what the media is supposed to do, the Romney campaign's explanation made it that much worse. I won't make this a more political thread that it is already, but Romney's flip flops are many and often. I have alluded to just one. Is he the moderate Republican of Massachusetts or the severe Republican running for the Presidency of the US?
Tacenda Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Me as well. Other than the opening prayer, and 3 talks by church members.Where the blazes was I? Opening prayer? 3 talks by church members? Are we talking about the convention that aired last night? The only member that spoke may be the one that use to be a member and that would be Rubio. Can you please enlighten me? I'm aware that there was commentary from members before the convention opened up. Maybe pre taped? I heard that members described how Romney helped them while he was their "pastor", etc.I know that on the news shows this morning they commented that Clint Eastwood filled up some time that should have been given to Romney to explain more about who he is....

Zakuska Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 I heard at least 3-4 scriptures being referenced and or paraphrased. By the speakers.James 1:5 - Pure Religion... feed the hungry heel the sick etc. etc.Do unto others...From cals link.He added, "I'm proud, not in a way that I feel like we're better than other denominations, but in a way that we were able to show people, like the Evangelicals, that we're Christians."
Tacenda Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 http://www.buzzfeed....eys-new-openessWoo hoo, I'm watching or listening right now to each talk and the prayer! Thank you, I guess I missed alot of it, thank goodness these were here.

Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I was just watching Grant Bennett's speech and wondering why he used the term "Pastor", instead of Bishop? (Did someone already bring that up?)
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Thanks for the link, Calmoriah. I missed a lot of that.
Zakuska Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 I was just watching Grant Bennett's speech and wondering why he used the term "Pastor", instead of Bishop? (Did someone already bring that up?)I believe for the same reason that through translation the Liahona in the BOM is eventually described as a compass.Through their speaches the speakers refer to bishops etc. but then kind of liken those positions to their equivalets in the more general population of the EV world. Of course thats going to provide much fodder for the conspiracy theorists to go on... Mormons wanting to become more Mainstream and accepted. etc. etc.
Tacenda Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I was just watching Grant Bennett's speech and wondering why he used the term "Pastor", instead of Bishop? (Did someone already bring that up?)My guess is that outsiders would get confused, a bishop is pretty high up in the Catholic church so maybe they might compare it to that status. So really a "pastor" lines up better with the duties of a bishop in our faith.Edit: oops I notice Zakuska is already on it...
thesometimesaint Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Libs:While the term Bishop is more appropriate for LDS. We know what Bishops do.The vast majority at the convention would understand Romney's religion better when his position is called Pastor, as opposed to the position of Bishop in the Catholic church.
Libs Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I figured it was for better understanding of the position of Bishop, but you're right that some people will try to make something out of that. It kind of took me by surprise and just sounded....funny.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I was just watching Grant Bennett's speech and wondering why he used the term "Pastor", instead of Bishop? (Did someone already bring that up?)A Bishop is a Pastor...
