100 Earth Like Planets Within 30 Light Years

If life was verified on other planets, it would be interesting to see each faith respond to it. I think Mormons would respond very well. How do you think each group would react to this kind of news?

Edit: "There could be many billions of planets not much bigger than Earth circling faint stars in our galaxy, says an international team of astronomers."

Not sure of the response, could the church handle all that additional missionary work?

Although I appreciate your humor on this, in all seriousness I would imagine that the Gospel is already being preached where any of Father's children dwell. And I expect that they have their own dispensations, such that we would not be permitted to reach them to screw up their progression.

I also expect that any earthlike worlds we are able to visit (unlikely, unless new physics is discovered) will be unpeopled. I'd be happy to discover otherwise, though (unless they were the Borg!).

motie.pngI like to think that the gospel is taught there, but we don't have a guarrantee of it being retained. They may be in the midst of an apostasy that may last longer, far longer than we may imagine, they may be a highly developed singularly religious world whose organization is nigh unto Zion also. A wide range of possible speculation. What if they were only slightly human looking but bipedal? Edited by Jeff K.

I'm not sure we could get there, much less do missionary work—we're talking light-years of travel, meaning, even if we had some sort of near-light-speed transport, our grandchildren might be the ones doing the ministering.

And, we would still be left with the issue of stewardship: is it our job to preach to people beyond the solar system?

I wonder if the doctirne would have to change if we got to the point of communication with and travel to other worlds. I can put a finger on it yet, but I feel that somehow, it would have to. Would such changes contradict existing doctrine? I don't know.

The doctrine would not change so much as your understanding of the doctrine. Language is flexible, and vague.

The scriptures have addressed these other worlds. For example, this earth is the most wicked, the only one where Christ would be killed. His atonement is infinite, and applies to these other worlds.

Don't forget the recent discovery of a diamond planet -- clearly an exalted planet as described in the scriptures.

A diamond planet? I don't recall hearing about that one... got a link?

I don't know about diamond but the Book of Revelation speaks of a "sea of glass" . . .

  • Revelation 15:2

2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the seaof glass, having the harps of God.

  • Revelation 4:6

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 130:7

7 But they reside in the presence of God, on a globe like a sea ofglass and fire, where all things for their glory are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 77:1

1 Q. What is the sea of glass spoken of by John, 4th chapter, and 6th verse of the Revelation? A. It is the earth, in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state.

I do believe that God is an artist. So expect a good variety of life in the universe. If Earth's life is a mirror, Expect Life to be ranging to the interesting to cool to amazing to scary. Each of Race having their own religion that is tailored to their needs.

Suppose there are people on other worlds. How would they know about what Jesus Christ did on earth? Do they have the Old and New Testament? The Book of Mormon? Prophets? Apostles? The Doctrine and Covenants?

If life is discovered on other planets I'm going to be much more concerned with them having superior technology or introducing germs/disease/species into our ecosystem (or any general threat to humanity). Their feelings about the various ideologies attributed to Jesus Christ would be pretty low on my list.

It's a secret, but part of the Mall money has been diverted towards shooting Bibles and Books of Mormon into deep space as part of the LDS Church's push into new missionary markets.

Imagine if we were the native Americans and were slowly pushed aside or vanquished due to our tribal nature and lack of unity tied to our poor stone age technology. Would we eventually integrate into their species after say half of our population was wiped out by their superior diseases and we were removed from our traditional lands?

Would there be a book about a great people that once had shining cities called "Mormons" who had a great influence and were a great civilization and building temples or establishing Zion throughout the land, but whose evidence in later centuries all but disappeared. Hmmm, interesting no?

First, I have no idea how to parse this statement. The first paragraph seems unrelated to the second paragraph; it is hard to understand what you mean by integrating species; and the entire post seems to have nothing to do with anything mentioned in this thread, so I can't even get context.

I'm sure you have something interesting to say, but I'm at a loss trying to figure out what that might be.

I remember Joseph said something to the effect that there is no space in which there is no kingdom. This struck me as I viewed the youtube videos of the NASA spaceshuttle missions and saw the many different objects and lights moving around the shuttle. I guess space is really not empty afterall.

Dang, Bond, can't you just keep quiet about that? It won't be a secret if you keep blabbing it all over the Internet!
