Saints Alive Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 What Sunday meetings are we commanded to attend and by what authority? (e.g. are we commanded to attend sacrament in the scriptures or by the prophets? is sunday school attendance a commandment? Is relief society attendance a commandment for women?)
DarkScythe Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Ideally all of them. If you have a job that makes you work most of Sundays, then it is sacrament is the one you should go to.
altersteve Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Sacrament is the most important, but we should go to all the meetings, if possible. I have a problem keeping this commandment at the moment, though... I usually only go to sacrament meeting because I don't like my ward. My family moves around a lot, so I've been in several wards over the past couple years, and I guess I'm a bit tired of having to start over in a new ward all the time. But I know that's a pathetic excuse not to go, although I do hope to get into a single's ward within the next couple weeks.
cinepro Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 It's my understanding that Sacrament meeting is the only "mandatory" meeting, with Priesthood/ RS also being important. Sunday School was always more of an "optional" meeting before the block schedule, and now it is always placed in the middle of the block schedule to make it inconvenient to skip.

Duncan Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Our ward council decided on sunday to get rid of PEC meeting. So now it's two ward council mtgs a month and a meeting strictly about lost sheep

(e.g. are we commanded to attend sacrament in the scriptures or by the prophets? is sunday school attendance a commandment? There are numerous activities we can do on the Sabbath including, importantly, attending our meetings and partaking of the Sacrament. We also read our scriptures, work on family history, visit the ailing, etc etc I've never considered attending Sunday School or Rel Soc a "commandment" but certainly counsel. I take seriously Sacrament meeting being a commandment because of the Savior gathering his apostles and introducing the sacrament by breaking the bread and passing the cup symbolic of his body and blood, admonishing them to eat and drink. And after Christ's crucifixtion, the apostles continued to perform the sacrament as instituted by the Savior... and we do so today.GG
ERMD Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 (edited) We are not commanded to attend any meetings."Do you strive to... attend your Sacrament and Priesthood/Relief Society meetings..."I find it significant that the question uses the word "your". Edited November 1, 2011 by ERMD
rpn Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Sacrament meeting, and for men, priesthood are mandatory meetings. Rest are optional (to the extent one ignores the scripture, "He who must be commanded in all things the same is a slothful and not a wise servant.")
Saints Alive Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Sacrament meeting, and for men, priesthood are mandatory meetings. Rest are optional (to the extent one ignores the scripture, "He who must be commanded in all things the same is a slothful and not a wise servant.")do you have scripture to support this?
rpn Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 "Thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day" (D&C 59:9) And I'm not sure where I got the notion that meeting as a quorum was required (though I think it was from something I read in the D&C. The Handbook only says that all priesthood holders must attend an annual state priesthood meeting.
BCSpace Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 None are optional unless you want to go to Protestant or Catholic heaven (too bad this is not in General).
