ERMD Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Astro, our 11 year-old harlequin great dane (one of two) hasn't been doing well the past couple of months. The time has come to do what we have known is inevitable but wanted to put off as long as we could. He needs our help now. Tomorrow will be the day. Our kids have grown up with him and his sister.
mercyngrace Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I'm sorry, ERMD. How are your children holding up?
ERMD Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 The two girls (16, 18) are home giving him lots of TLC right now.Our son is in the mission field. We'll call his president and ask him to tell him.
Gohan Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I think President will be good with doing that, he's a pretty great guy.

Nathair/|\ Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Oh, dear. I am so sorry. You and your family are in my prayers and next time I practice my Sphere of Protection, I will send y'all some energy.
Garden Girl Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 (edited) I'm so sorry... just over a year ago I had to put down my dear Charlie-cat. I wept as I held him in my arms and felt him slip into his sleep, and somehow I know he had purpose and his little spirit is in whatever sphere he belongs... so I know how difficult it is to lose a loved pet.I think Great Danes are so beautiful... and yours certainly are... prayers for your family.GGEdit to add: Astro's markings remind me of my current cat... Bob. Except Bob has more solid white on his chest and stomach area, but his back and head have the irregular black patches... Astro is beautiful, and he had a wonderful home with your family. TAO Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 It's very tough putting animals down... just know he will be in a good place... happy =).Best Wishes,TAO
bluebell Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 That is so hard. My heart goes out to your family as they get ready to part with dear Astro.
Messenger Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 (edited) This is kind of similar, although not exactly the same, as my childhood pet. I got a cat when I was 5 years old. We had been through a lot together. She would sit on my shoulder when tromping through the woods and fields. To this day, I Edited March 31, 2011 by Messenger 1

ERMD Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 It was a difficult day, but all is done. You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us 1
bluebell Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 "'Men,' said Mr. Kyle, 'people have been trying to understand dogs ever since the beginning of time. One never knows what they'll do. You can read every day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people call this loyalty. I don't. I may be wrong, but I call it love--the deepest kind of love.'" - Wilson Rawls, Where the Red Fern Grows, Ch. 18
Garden Girl Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet it is a joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....Author UnknownGG 2
Kenngo1969 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 We had to put down our toy poodle, the aptly-named Pipsqueak (Pip, for short; Pipsqueak was entirely too big a mouthful for such a little dog ) in 2004. I miss her still, but I like to think she sent Shiloh, a much bigger poodle who comes to visit me when our walks around the local park next to my house coincide: same perpetual motion, boundless energy, and effervescent spirit. Shiloh is the very personification (Dogification ... ? ) of Will Rogers's pronouncement that "There are no strangers in the world, only friends I haven't met yet." Much to the consternation of his owners, Shiloh loves to greet all of his friends, old and new ... multiple times on the same walk.My condolences on your loss.
Brazecake Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 That's really sad you had to put your dog down... Beautiful dog. Great Dane's are awesome. Best wishes

I feel your pain. One of our 17 year old cats passed away. Red was a fine companion. I had a vision of him walking in a high mountain meadow, seeking his ancestors, with a lively step.
ERMD Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 We had a blue point Siamese that lived to be 19. I never considered myself a "cat person", but she won me over.
Garden Girl Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 We had a blue point Siamese that lived to be 19. I never considered myself a "cat person", but she won me over.Cats have a way of doing that... Most people think cats don't have a personality, but in 99% of the cases that's just not true. Perhaps the owners have other pets and children and get so caught up in the daily routine that they don't have time to appreciate the cat.My cat, Bob, and I share a life... I can't believe how smart and funny he is, and soooo vocal. We communicate in such a real way. He let's me know when he wants something, and if I tell him no, he'll meow louder and faster... finally I give up and go see what he wants. He KNOWS I'll do that and so that just reinforces his behavior... worse than a little kid. But he's so beautiful I can't get mad at him. And he knows that too...GG 1

The time has come to do what we have known is inevitable but wanted to put off as long as we could. He needs our help now. Tomorrow will be the day. Our kids have grown up with him and his sister. So sorry for your loss. We had to do the same thing last year with our 14-year old chocolate labrador. He was our baby before my wife and I had our own human babies. Fortunately, our children were too young to understand our loss. We mourned the loss of our lab for a couple months, and then began looking for a new companion. We adopted a beautiful chocolate labrador from a lab rescue, and she has turned out to be perfect for our family. We still miss our old buddy, but if you are up for it, nothing helps sooth the loss of a previous dog like getting a new dog, especailly rescuing one who needs a home.
