Senator Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Joining the Church is giving your word to attend the meetings. Is that part of an eight year old baptismal interview. I forget.
Sky Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Please show me where one makes a promise to attend meetings. I don't recall making such a promise.H.How about by renewing our baptismal covenants every Sunday by partaking of the Sacrament? Also, by serving in our callings. These things all entail attending meetings. Surely these things count, don
Sky Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is still growing relative to many other churches: See the recent statistics from the National Council of Churches: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6,058,907 members, up 1.42 percent.
Jason Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Please show me where one makes a promise to attend meetings. I don't recall making such a promise.H.It's in the fine print.
LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 How about by renewing our baptismal covenants every Sunday by partaking of the Sacrament? Also, by serving in our callings. These things all entail attending meetings. Surely these things count, don
LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 It's in the fine print.Show me, Jason. Where is the fine print? And specifically, tell me where new converts agree to this fine print?H.
maupayman Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 It's in the fine print.I'm pretty sure its also in the fine print that the church is not a fraud. If not, then maybe you guys should add it.... you know, to the fine print.
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 If you were baptized into one church and now attend the meetings of a different church then you broke your word, yes.I disagree here because the point isn't clarified enough. Your baptismal covenants are:1) To take upon yourself the name of Christ2) Stand as a witness of Christ 3) Follow his CommandmentsNow, no where in this covenant did you promise anything the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints only to the Living Christ through the Restored Gospel. Your faith isn't in a building or in men, it is in Jesus Christ, so if you feel that LDS isn't the true Church and you go to RLDS or FLDS or Community of Christ or the Temple Lot folks in Independence,or not attend any LDS Church but still hold strong to the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and testify to the world that he is the Son of God then your have not broken your covenant with Christ. You simple lost faith in the men who lead the LDS Church, there is no sin in losing faith in men, only in losing faith in Christ. Now I would argue that if you leave Mormonism all together and reject the Restored Gospel and instead convert to another faith outside of Mormonism, then you have broken your covenants. You have rejected the Restored Gospel and by rejecting the Restored Gospel in my opinion you have rejected the Living Christ. But someone like BookofMormonLuvr hasn't sinned simply for losing faith in the leadership of the LDS Church and going to the RLDS Church, I believe he cannot have access to the blessing of the priesthood just like he feels the same about be as a member of the LDS Church, but we both love Jesus Christ and have faith in him and his Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ., we just have differing opinions of parts of the Church History and the dogma. Now I believe that only the LDS Church is the true Church, as he believes that only the RLDS Church is true but only Christ knows which Church is his Church and he loves all who seek him, sincerely and with complete faith. Doctrinal differences are not what Christ looks at IMO. He looks at our hearts and what we did with out life.IMO, the LDS, the RLDS, the FLDS, and the Community of Christ, will all be united by Christ I either right before his return, or right after because we are going to have "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" (Ephesians 4:5)
Senator Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I'm pretty sure its also in the fine print that the church is not a fraud. Come on, man.....Can you resist it......just a little bit??
Mark Beesley Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Don't try to put people in buckets. Is this a Canadian idiom? I've never heard this expression before.
ELF1024 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Show me, Jason. Where is the fine print? And specifically, tell me where new converts agree to this fine print?H.D&C 58:2626 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is acompelled in all things, the same is a bslothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.
LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Is this a Canadian idiom? I've never heard this expression before.Really? Maybe it is... I hear/use it regularly.

LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Is that part of an eight year old baptismal interview. I forget. No, there is no question about how frequently you attend service. The only attendance requirement is pre-baptism, you have to of attended at least three services to be baptized. After baptism there is no attendance requirement to be a active temple recommend holding member in good standing. I know several people in my ward that for work or health reasons only attend services a few times a year, they still tithe (usually by mailing the envelope to the Bishop) still hold recommends, and the Aaronic Priesthood makes scheduled trips to these members homes to ensure they can partake of the sacrament on a regular basis. Attendance is not a requirement of your baptism covenant nor to be a active member of the Church, now if you just want to sit at home on Sunday's then they will consider you inactive even if you pay your tithes, but those with legitimate reasons to not attend service are given all the blessings of active membership and can receive recommends and even callings (though callings are less likely due to the time constraints)There is no fine print in the baptismal covenant to the LDS Church the covenant is between you and Christ not you and the Church.
ELF1024 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 There is no fine print in the baptismal covenant to the LDS Church the covenant is between you and Christ not you and the Church. You must have the Large Print scriputures then, as far as I can tell, the entire QUAD is the small print...
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 You must have the Large Print scriputures then, as far as I can tell, the entire QUAD is the small print...You got me, I have the medium size, should of gotten the tiny one cause that thing is a beast to carry around.
LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 D&C 58:2626 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is acompelled in all things, the same is a bslothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.Ah, yes. The catch-all commandment. The old "Something sounds good, so it must be a commandment but I can't prove it so I'll invoke D&C 58:26" trick. Here's a few more: "All church members must pay at least 2% of their income in fast offering""All church members must attend all ward events""All church members must avoid cola""Women must not wear pants to church""Men must wear white shirts to church"And I invoke D&C 58:26 on all of those things. Anyone else want to add a D&C 58:26-style commandment? Now, maybe I can get my question answered - Where do new converts specifically promise to attend Church meetings?H.
ELF1024 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Ah, yes. The catch-all commandment. The old "Something sounds good, so it must be a commandment but I can't prove it so I'll invoke D&C 58:26" trick. Anyone else want to add a D&C 58:26-style commandment? Now, maybe I can get my question answered - Where do new converts specifically promise to attend Church meetings?H.Yeah, well... I did a quick search on LDS.ORG for "commanded attend sacrament meeting" and didn't turn up anything useful. However, I believe I have heard it more than once."All church members must pay at least 2% of their income in fast offering"New to me...."All church members must attend all ward events"Never have..."All church members must avoid cola"Buggar, I drink Coke all the time."Women must not wear pants to church"I don't care what my wife wears... she's beautiful in whatever... including pants."Men must wear white shirts to church"I haven't worn a white shirt in YEARS.
Mark Beesley Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Please show me where one makes a promise to attend meetings. I don't recall making such a promise.H.D&C 59:9-12Good luck with your argument to God on Judgment Day that you never made any such promise. What other arguments do you think will work with Him? Indeed, do you think anyone, standing before God on Judgment Day is going to to be in any kind of state of mind to make any kind of arugment? The more likely scenario is that Judgment Day is just that, a day for judgment to be handed down. Evidence and aruguments are being presented now by our actions. The Rules of Court are found in the Standard Works. Don't expect a favorable judgment if you decide not to play by the rules.
The Nehor Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Not preachy at all. I found your response thoughtful and insightful. Do you think that the members can do anything to change the image of the church or do you think the image of the church is just fine and doesn't need to change.Other then just living the gospel there isn't much we can or should do. Trying to change the global image of the Church will most likely have less impact then just living the gospel around those you interact with.
LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 D&C 59:9-12Good job. You've found a commandment to attend sacrament meeting, which is a heck of a lot better than most of the dribble your fellows were offering up.Folks, as a hint - lds.org allows you to search the scriptures with keywords like "sacrament", "obedience", "commandment"Good luck with your argument to God on Judgment Day that you never made any such promise. What other arguments do you think will work with Him? Indeed, do you think anyone, standing before God on Judgment Day is going to to be in any kind of state of mind to make any kind of arugment? The Rules of Court are found in the Standard Works. Don't expect a favorable judgment if you decide not to play by the rules. The point of this aside is not trying to weasel out of obedience. The point is that, when making statements of judgment against your fellow man, be sure to back it up.As you've shown... Now, for extra points, can someone show me where we are commanded to attend our other meetings? H.
Jason Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Show me, Jason. Where is the fine print? And specifically, tell me where new converts agree to this fine print?Actually, what my answer really meant was "if you ask ridiculous questions you can expect ridiculous answers."

LDSToronto Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Actually, what my answer really meant was "if you ask ridiculous questions you can expect ridiculous answers."What was the ridiculous question? H.
The Nehor Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I suspect (no proof) that gullibility is generational. While access to information may not equal an education, it does facilitate education in ways that anyone over 30 has never experienced. A 15 year old, today, can access more information, and knows how to access more information, on any topic, than a 15 year old could just 10 years ago. And, information jockeying is second nature to kids nowadays; they are as adept at using the internet to cull information as we were at using telephones and card catalogues. Don't underestimate the skills that the younger generation have with respect to information handling.H.In many ways I'm part of the 'younger' generation. I remember going to libraries as a young child, the transition to prodigy and the beginnings of the internet when I was in grade school, doing research on the internet in High School, and doing most of my college research (at least finding books) online. The tech savvy generation:While the deluge of information is real our ability to weed out what is real and even our desire for real information is the same as it has always been.
