WalkerW Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I was provoked, but I had been dealing with BrianH (the "Alexander the Great was a GREEK!" guy), and so I was pretty irritated. I don't know why I go back there at all.So you can inspire blog entries like this:http://walkstar.blogspot.com/2009/11/make-bunny.html
Scott Lloyd Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hi Scott,I'm sorry I have shaken your faith in the Bible. I imagine you could just eject Luke 9:61, and 2 Corinthians 2:13 from your Bible, and you should be ok.(Emergency averted)OK. Still a rather disturbing number of Germanic cognates in there, though.

Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 So you can inspire blog entries like this:http://walkstar.blogspot.com/2009/11/make-bunny.htmlI cannot believe that that was the arguemnt over there.
Doctor Steuss Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 [...] I don't know why I go back there at all.Obviously to do the bidding of Azazel... duh.
Vance Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I cannot believe that that was the arguemnt over there. Why should anything demonically inspired shock you?
SilverKnight Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Obviously to do the bidding of Azazel... duh.Get it right.Azazel made me yell at her.Astaroth and Asmodeus are the ones who make Mak go there.
alter idem Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 The questions I asked did not call for a violation of board guidelines. To reiterate, I didn't know the "demeaning name" had reference to a thread on the other board. I thought it was something earlier in this thread.Again, I wasn't asking anyone to cross post (see above). I've never visited CARM, and I don't have any desire to do so, least wise to poke around over there to find answers to questions that could easily be responded to here. Are you a moderator? No, Do I have to be a moderator to help a 'newbie'? I've seen posters here ask a new poster to do something that might get them in trouble. From reading the thread, I knew the info. you were asking for was on CARM. Just wanted to make sure Catherine did not blindly comply by providing a link, which could get her in trouble. I don't visit CARM either.
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Why should anything demonically inspired shock you?Oh boy. Well it was fun while it lasted.
Scott Lloyd Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 No, Do I have to be a moderator to help a 'newbie'? As some of us suspected, Catherine Aurelia/Athansius/Carmella is no newbie.Do the board guidelines say anything about board nannies?
Calm Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 And, hopefully, this thread is done. Frankly, it should have been over when we figured out it was all a 'tempest in a teapot'. It was worth it just for Streuss' comments.
Scott Lloyd Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 It was worth it just for Streuss' comments. The entire thing is absorbingly fascinating -- like watching a cat torment a mouse. Unlike the mouse, though, Carmella keeps coming back for more.
Pahoran Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 or Jewish. Certainly not Mormons who have a vested interest in shoring up Smith's polytheism.Well Cathanasius, thank you for letting that lovely lyceum mask slip.Clearly, in your view, Mormons cannot be scholars. Why? Because they believe things you don't.Tell the CARMites hello from me. And remind them that proud proclamations of bigotry that get a chorus of cheers over there, merely expose you over here.Regards,Pahoran
Vance Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Ah yes, the good Dr. kills with his satire. Here's to you Dr. Steuss
maklelan Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 What was that all about? I couldn't figure out were that guy was going with it.Someone had stated that they agreed with my theory that the catalyst for Judaism's development of monotheism was their interaction with the Hellenistic worldview (i.e. Greek philosophy, which was the first to argue for monotheism). Brian responded that the Greeks were polytheists and so could never have inspired monotheism. I corrected him by letting him know that most were, but that the Greek philosophical movement was largely opposed to the pagan gods, and many argued for a type of monotheism (sometimes personal and sometimes not). He responded that the Greeks were polytheists. I repeated myself, and he repeated himself about three or four times. Then he responded that even if not all Greeks were polytheists, the Hellenistic worldview must of necessity mean the normative aspects of Greek culture, which he guessed were polytheistic. I corrected him again telling him that actually Hellenism doesn't mean Greek, specifically, but refers to specific aspects of the Hellenic cultures spread by Alexander the Great, a Macedonian, and those he left in the regions of the ancient Near East. A part of that culture was Greek philosophy, which heavily influenced Judaism through Alexandria. Brian responded that I was stupid and that Alexander the Great was a Greek. I told him he was not, that he was Macedonian, and that his father had actually conquered Greece. He told me that since Alexander was fully assimilated into Brian's idea of "Greek culture," the worldview he spread was of normative Greek culture, which was polytheistic. At this point my brain started oozing out of my ear and I had to leave and find something less aggravating to do. So I went to the Ashmolean, which was incredible, and then sat next to Geza Vermes and listened to Guy Stroumsa's seminar about Tertullian and the rabbis on religious toleration.
Doctor Steuss Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 [...] and listened to Guy Stroumsa's seminar about Tertullian and the rabbis on religious toleration.I. Hate. You.(In a brotherly, smother you in your sleep out of jealousy, and put toe-nail clippings up your nose, sort of way).----------------------------Here's to you Dr. Steuss[...]The real winner here is Robitussin. Lots, and lots of Robitussin.
consiglieri Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I'm dealing with Genesis 4. Is or is not Yahweh the biological father of Cain, the murderer. Yes or No? I just stumbled on this thread because it looked so interesting, but I think you may have us confused with somebody else.Mormons are the ones who believe Michael is the father of Jesus; not the ones who believe Jehovah is the father of Cain. Seriously, though, I've been around the block a few times and never heard any Mormon profess such a belief.Hope this helps. All the Best!--Consiglieri

consiglieri Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Or, if you prefer, an Anglican scholar. They are the best scholars you know, besides the Jesuits. A Jesuit if possible would be the very best.Okay, now you're pulling my leg.
Pahoran Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Okay, now you're pulling my leg.Indeed. As if Cathanasius/Carmella/Millarca/Mircalla would be willing to accept anything an Anglican scholar like, say, Margaret Barker says! But now that she's slithered back to her nest with the other vipers, I'm wondering if she really imagines she has covered herself in glory here. Frankly, I think she let her side down in the first sentence of the OP, when she so brazenly misrepresented Mak's argument. And then, later in the thread, when she even more brazenly misrepresented the responses she'd received!I think her problem is that that is really SOP over in the nest. It seems never to have occurred to her that it wouldn't be protected behaviour here, as she obviously expected it to be.Perhaps someone with access to the nest ought to remind them all that if they come here, the moderation regime will not be designed to privilege dishonesty.Regards,Pahoran
alter idem Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 That quote is wrong. It cites a number of books, but doesn't give any page numbers at all, and having read several of those books, I don't recall anything intimating that Alexander was Greek. Macedon was a different country with a different ethnic background and even a different language.Uh yea...I'll come to you for Hebrew translations, but I think I'll get my history someplace else.
volgadon Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Uh yea...I'll come to you for Hebrew translations, but I think I'll get my history someplace else. Like Robin Lane Fox who says the same thing?
volgadon Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Cassuto! Ah the memories that brings back. We had to read him in elementary school. We all found it quite dull, though he was brilliant in his day.
