Apologies for apparently giving a false impression  I wasn’t actually trying to “exonerate” anything.  I provided information that actually goes against my own intuition.  It seems to indicate that the State of California is failing in its fight against homelessness, and a big component of that failure seems to be the rapidly-rising cost of housing — among other things.

Thank you for clarifying. In absolutely no way did you offend.

The West Coast states seem to be attracting lots of homeless folks. We left there partly because it was negatively impacting the area in which we lived. My son who was a homeless vet for 7 years once told me that the regular folks in the South (not necessarily the law enforcement authorities) were the kindest people to the homeless, and the worst were in the Northwest, and he travelled all over North America.

I saw advertisements for just over the line casinos all the time from my youth when approaching the state lines of Nevada (we lived in California, family and BYU were in Utah to begin with; then, we were in Utah and family and friends…and Disneyland ‘shudder’ were in California).  Also saw direct flights offered to various sin cities when living in Canada, California, Utah, Kansas.  It appears to be a historical practice to make money off of people who don’t want their own neighborhoods to be corrupt, but still want the opportunity to dabble in such vices when the urge hits them.

I was referring to the easy time our high school guys (teens and young adults) had in getting alcohol, marijuana, and fun with the ladies in Juarez in the late 50s and early 60s. It was quite risky to go there, but I suppose that was part of the excitement. Sounds like Juarez hasn’t changed much and is still corrupt, but who knows?

No kids I knew went to Vegas or California or flew there for those things at that time, and there was regular travel between Los Alamos and the Nevada and White Sands (near Juarez) testing sites.

Not that I participated, by the way. 😬
