What’s wrong with the idea of having empowered elders from every dispensation participate in the gloriously rewarding work of bringing the gospel of Christ to the dead? Perhaps they’d be better employed playing harps and singing hymns while floating on clouds? For that matter, what would be the benefit of having only elders from previous dispensations do the missionary work among the dead? Personally, I find your question a rather odd one. By way of illustrating the shortsightedness your question, why wouldn’t it be a worthwhile idea to have empowered elders teach the gospel to their beloved deceased family members? What greater manifestation of turning the hearts of the fathers to their children, and turning of the hearts of the children to their fathers than by allowing family members to bring the blessings of the gospel to family member who preceded them in death? Think about it… 1

Think about it… I’m not questioning the purpose but rather the numbers involved. Why is it necessary for all the elders and prophets from this dispensation to go into the spirit world to preach the gospel when the saints (also including the elders and prophets) from previous dispensations have already been commissioned by Christ to do so, as outlined in Doctrine and Covenants? Many of their names are recorded in verses 38-49. Are there limitations in the spirit world regarding the number of people to whom the gospel can be preached by each evangelist?

I've been absent from the board. Yes, the devils recognize him and must obey him. But they know him from the pre-existence, and never had faith. They will also be cast into outer darkness when their task of temptation is finished, and will not see a kingdom of glory. Those who are resurrected into the Telestial Kingdom will have rejected Christ's atonement, but not in knowledge. So they will have suffered for their own sins, and inherit the lowest kingdom of glory. Thus, at the end their knees will bow and their tongues confess that He is the Christ, because they will have been brought into knowledge by that point -- and will remember their pre-existent lives. 1

Latter-day prophets have said that the spirits of those who have died are not far from us. President Ezra Taft Benson said: “Sometimes the veil between this life and the life beyond becomes very thin. Our loved ones who have passed on are not far from us” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1971, 18; or Ensign, June 1971, 33). President Brigham Young taught that the postmortal spirit world is on the earth, around us (see Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young [1997], 279)."
